July 5th, 1934 - March 22nd, 2021

Frederick H. Matros passed away peacefully at home at age 86 with the support of the wonderful East End Hospice and his loving wife by his side. He is survived by his three children, daughter in law, son in law, his two grandchildren, brother in law, sister in law, and his nieces and nephews and cousins. He was a proud FDNY retired firefighter, U.S. Army Veteran and Massapequa Mustangs football coach. He achieved sobriety in 1993 and maintained it, also proud that he quit smoking as well. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, playing golf, poker and loved a stack of scratch off tickets. He had great freestyle dance moves and was an excellent cook known especially for his huge portions of shrimp creole, baked clams, stuffed mushrooms and shrimp potato salad. Fred liked to enthusiastically tell tales of his travel and work experience. He enjoyed debate and wasn't afraid to yell, especially at failed football plays on TV LOL but he had a soft and sentimental side that developed as he got older. He was a fan of the Peanuts cartoons, Mel Brooks movies, offbeat humor and old westerns. He was creative, loved building sets for model trains, making costumes for Halloween and annually setting up his ever growing Christmas village. Fred valued his close friends, the fireman's parties, golf outings and poker games. He had several spoiled family pets throughout the years and later liked visits from his grand dogs and cat. His family was important to him, he enjoyed hearing about everyone's endeavors and he was always helpful with a road atlas for road trips in the days before GPS. Fred would boast about his children and grandsons and he was proud of their accomplishments. He loved bar-b-ques and fireworks and really had a great time at family gatherings. He has jovially referred to people of all ages as "kid". Especially at the end, Fred was so thankful for his wife's care and dedication. One of his last requests was for some "shrimp- the big ones, not the little ones"...so have one for him.
