Forever in Our Hearts
At the age of 79, Fred Elton Pierce Jr. went to be with his Lord on the morning of Saturday, November 27, 2021.
Freddie was born to Fred Elton Pierce, Sr. and Georgia Lois Patterson Pierce in Mobile, Alabama. He grew up in Toulminville, Alabama and graduated from Murphy High School in 1961 where he participated in varsity sports. After having served four years in the United States Air Force, he attended the University of South Alabama. Over the years, Fred was involved in many community organizations like the Mobile Jaycees and The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick. As an avid runner, he could also be found in local running clubs and continued to walk regularly at Cottage Hill Park. Most recently Fred enjoyed fellowship with his neighbors and the members of Cross Culture (formerly Hope of the Nations) Church. Freddie loved football, especially the University of Alabama and the New Orleans Saints. He spent many years on the press team for Harrison Broadcasting and enjoyed attending countless games and interviewing players. In his early years, Freddie had a successful career in insurance. Later, he opened his own business as a painting contractor, experiencing the American dream of being self-employed.
Freddie loved his family. He was the middle child of seven children. He was preceded in death by both his parents; his grandson Bryston Alan Gardner; his sisters Abbie Ouida Wiley, Agnes Marie (Arthur "Johnny") Daniels, and Deloris (Stanley) Bliss; his nephew Henry Oliver Wiley, Jr.; his niece Vicki Wiley Doughty and his great niece Kelsey Lynn Wiley. Left to honor him and remember his love are his three children Stacey Pierce Gardner, Fred Elton (Donna) Pierce, III and Andrea (Gregory) Peck, along with his grandson Brendan Cole Pierce, his loving sisters Georgia Louise Pierce and Marian Elizabeth Pierce, and his brother Robert Wayne (Catherine) Pierce. He is also survived by his first wife and mother of his three children, Marta McConnell Pierce, as well as seven nieces, two nephews, nine grand nieces, eleven grand nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. Bonnie Jean Bryant was Freddie's faithful and loving companion since 2004. Bonnie, her three children and her nine grand children were also family to Fred.
Whether you knew him as "Fred", "Freddie", "Uncle Freddie", "Mr. Fred", "Little Freddie", "Mr. Pierce", or "Dad"... he was a delight to be around. He could make you laugh, he could let you cry. He loved to read. He loved to run. He loved to dance. He would always make you smile. He was special to us all, and we were all special to him.
At his request, Fred's body has been donated to the University of South Alabama Anatomical Gifts Program. Donations to the program can be made in his memory. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Volunteers of America located at 1204 Hillcrest Road, Mobile, AL 36609 on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 2:00pm.

I was 7 years old when we moved to Mobile from northern Alabama, in 1953. We rented a small house in Toulminville on a then-unpaved Donald St. next door to the Pierce family. Freddie and Wayne were the very first friends I made in Mobile. Freddie, being four years older than I, was someone I looked up to. He was quite an athlete and always had something going on. I could write a whole book but I was blessed to see him in October. He, I, and another neighbor, Sherman McNorton, had an opportunity to visit and reminisce for a short while. Due to my recuperating from a congestive issue, I will miss his memorial service but am there in spirit! We all loved Freddie!

I have known Freddie since I was 6 years old. I am 74 years old. He has been a dear friend and a role model for me and many others. He will be missed but will always be remembered.

I regret being unable to attend the memorial tomorrow. I met Fred through a mutual friend (Steve Schoenwald) and he was a faithful member of the ministry of Friends of Internationals for several years. He embraced the international students, refugees and immigrants who were a part of our ministry including All Nations Community Church. Fred was loving, kind and welcoming. I am confident he awaits all of us in heaven. ~ Jim Mather

I first met Fred when we built the new Worship Center at Woodridge Baptist Church where I was the pastor. He was a man of his word and did everything we asked him to do. When he finished his work there he gave me a gift which I have treasured and used since that day. We shared the love for running. I also run at Cottage Hill Park and we would talk over the years as we would meet. He was always cordial and kind to me. I will miss our conversations! I pray that God's Grace will be yours as a family!

I knew Fred many years ago when he was in the Insurance Business and he was a really nice person. I have not seen him since our office closed, but I remember him as always having a smile for everyone. My prayers to his family at this sad time. Sandy Lowell
