Fred Melcher

December 28th, 1947 - June 14th, 2019

December 28th, 1947 - June 14th, 2019

Fred Melcher passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019, in the company of his loving family. A life-long resident of Southern California, Fred influenced thousands of young minds as a passionate educator spanning four decades at four schools: Granada High School, Chaminade Middle School, Heschel Day School, and Sierra Canyon School. He strove to not just teach his students, but to inspire them to believe in their unique talents and ability to make the world a more just and kind place. His passion extended beyond the classroom and into his life-story play-by-play poetry, his fanaticism for the Yankees, his love for a body-or-heart-moving rock/blues/folk/Broadway song (preferably played LOUD), his magnificent VHS-turned-DVD-turned-Blue Ray movie collection (and the meticulous catalog to go with it), his comprehensive count-by-count collection of baseball books (plus civil rights, history, poetry, humor, and, of course, The Princess Bride), his uncanny padiddle predictions, his infuriating and impressive stories to answer every question (though you often had to question the validity of said stories), his sometimes-you-catch-it-sometimes-you-don't puns, and above everything else, his devotion, pride, and unending love for his family; daughter Diana, son David, daughter-in-law Kirsten, grandchildren Preslee, Michael, and yet-to-be named, and, beyond all compare, his wife Lyn, whose hand and heart he held at every opportunity for 42 years.

Fred was am amazing soul. He was always there to talk, and listen as I was going through a pretty tough time. He was always understanding, and I will always remember his wonderful warm smile.

Some of my best and most memorable memories took place in Fred's class. He wasn't only a teacher but he was a person we could look up to to help us figure out life at such a pivotal time of our lives- middle school. Among so many things I remember him going over the propositions with us so we could understand them despite the fact we were years away from voting. I remember memorizing prepositions in his class - a task I thought would be impossible but he made it so easy to learn. I remember him simplifying what the difference between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree murder was (no clue how we got on that subject matter in class, but he explained it nonetheless). I remember graduating middle school and coming to visit him and him showing me so proudly his "new toy" which happened to be his insulin pump. It's a wonder how generations of his students now love and have such fond memories of the Princess Bride because of this man! I'm so sad to hear of his passing but I will raise a cup of Nila Wafers tonight in his honor. May he rest in peace and his memory be a blessing to all.
