He elevated the heritage of St. Olav as a broad folk church tradition, and uplifted people wherever he served.

Finn Wagle was one of Norway's most distinguished church leaders of the modern era — a bishop, theologian, and passionate voice for creation care whose ministry left enduring marks on both the Church of Norway and Norwegian society at large. Born in Oslo on June 19, 1941, he grew up to become a man of deep faith, eloquent preaching, and restless curiosity about the world. Wagle began his theological formation at MF Norwegian School of Theology in 1962, earning his cand.theol. degree in 1968. During his studies, he was awarded a Willy Brandt Scholarship to study at Humboldt University in Berlin from 1966 to 1967 — an experience that broadened his intellectual horizons and deepened his ecumenical sensibility. He completed his practical theological training before stepping into his first ministerial role as an army chaplain in 1970. His pastoral ministry began in earnest as vicar in Sørreisa in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland, where he served from 1970 to 1975. He then moved into theological education, joining MF as an assistant professor at the Practical Theological Seminary while simultaneously working with the Association of Ministers in the Church of Norway. From 1981 to 1988, he directed the Church Educational Center (IKO), shaping faith formation for a generation of Norwegian believers. In 1988, he was appointed Dean of Nidaros Cathedral. The defining chapter of Wagle's life came in 1991, when he was consecrated Bishop of the Diocese of Nidaros — a position he would hold for seventeen years. That same year, he participated in the consecration ceremony for King Harald V and Queen Sonja at Nidaros Cathedral. In 2002, he officiated at the royal wedding of Princess Märtha Louise and Ari Behn. From 2002 to 2006, he served as Preses — the leading bishop of the Church of Norway's Bishop's Conference. As bishop, Wagle championed the revival of the Olavsarven (St. Olav heritage) and personally initiated the renewal of pilgrimage traditions to Nidaros Cathedral. He was a tireless advocate for environmental stewardship, co-authoring "En hustavle for en såret jord" (A Household Table for a Wounded Earth) with Eyvind Skeie. Known for his infectious warmth and gift for communication, he drew people upward with his preaching. A devoted hiker who found theological inspiration in the Norwegian landscape, he described direct contact with creation as both a necessity and a creative wellspring for his ministry. Finn Wagle retired in 2008 due to health reasons but never stopped engaging with the causes he loved. He passed away on June 2, 2026, at the age of 84, leaving behind a church and a society he had helped shape with grace, conviction, and a love for the earth he so often walked.
