In Loving Memory of Felecia Magiri Mburu (1986 – 2025)

The life of Felecia Magiri Mburu was a vibrant song; one of courage, compassion, laughter, and unshakable faith. Though she left this world too soon, on 8 September 2025, she left behind a legacy so radiant that her presence will continue to inspire generations to come.

Felecia was born on 10 February 1986 in Nakuru, Kenya, a beloved daughter and later a devoted mother, sister, and friend. From her earliest days, she carried a spark that set her apart, an eagerness to learn, to give, and to speak up for what was right. Those who knew her best describe her as a woman whose strength was matched only by her generosity, and whose deep faith shaped every choice she made.

Her childhood and education nurtured a curious and determined spirit. She grew up surrounded by love, alongside two brothers with whom she shared a bond of loyalty and friendship. Felecia excelled in her studies, from nursery school to university, her sharp mind and determined heart always propelling her forward. Her journey eventually took her across the world to the American University Washington College of Law, where she honed her skills in justice and human rights. In 2023, she was recognized as a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity, an achievement that reflected her global vision and her commitment to building a more inclusive world.

But Felecia was never defined by degrees or titles. She was a proud Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, yet what mattered most to her was how she used that platform. Whether serving in national institutions, leading initiatives she helped build, or working across Africa with international organizations, her principle remained the same: “Nothing For Us Without Us.” She tirelessly championed the voices of those often ignored, especially persons with disabilities, and she never shied away from challenging entrenched systems of injustice. For her, the law was not an abstract exercise, it was a tool to make dignity, fairness, and equity real for everyday people.

Her advocacy was fierce, but it was rooted in love. Felecia had the rare gift of combining boldness with compassion. She fought hard for justice, but she also gave freely of herself, whether through pro bono legal work, mentoring younger colleagues, or simply being present for a friend in need. Her laughter was contagious, her advice steady, and her faith unshaken.

Above all, Felecia was a mother. Her daughters were the joy of her life, and she poured into them her love, her values, and her example of living with both strength and kindness. To them, she was not only a parent but also a role model of courage, faith, and resilience.

Her faith was the anchor of her life. A long-time member of St. Mark’s Church Westlands, she served faithfully in the church, teaching Sunday School and contributing her skills as a lawyer to her community. Her walk with God was not just private devotion; it was visible in the way she lived, the way she raised her children, and the way she served others. She embodied the belief that worship and service go hand in hand.

Even in her final days, after falling ill in late August 2025, Felecia faced the moment with grace and peace. On 8 September, she rested in the Lord, leaving behind not silence, but a living echo of her values, her work, and her love.

Felecia’s story is not one of loss, but of legacy. Her life reminds us that even in a short span of years, one person can move mountains of injustice, lift the brokenhearted, and shine a light that cannot be extinguished. She showed us that justice is worth the fight, that love is worth giving freely, and that faith can sustain us through all seasons.

We celebrate her not only as a daughter, sister, and mother, but as a champion of equity, a friend to many, and a servant of God whose life was a gift to us all. Her memory continues in the children she raised, the policies she shaped, the lives she touched, and the countless people she inspired to believe that change is possible.

Rest well, Felecia. You lived fully, you loved deeply, and your light continues to shine. ❤️❤️

Some lives are not measured by how long they last, but by the depth of their presence and the impression they leave behind. Felicia Magiri Mburu was a person of substance, someone whose life carried meaning in ways that continue to resonate even after her passing. Those who knew her understood her strength, her character, and the quiet impact she had in her own space. Though our paths once crossed and later diverged, I remember her with respect and sincerity. Time and distance do not erase the significance of shared moments or the lessons that come from them. Her life deserves to be remembered for who she was — her values, her journey, and the mark she left on those around her. That is what remains. May she rest in peace, and may her memory continue to speak in the lives she touched.

Beautiful Felicia, what a wonderful gift you were to the world. I'm still heart broken by your passing....that you will no longer be at the MU snacks table....laughing....serving.....giving so generously......is unbelievable. A couple of months ago, you found me at that table. And you said, "Anne, you are not ok." And for sure I wasn't OK. I was hurting. And you proposed we meet for coffee...to talk and encourage me. Oh I wish we met for that coffee. Cz I know in my heart, your love, your laughter, your wisdom, would have made my pain bearable. My kids are sad. They've lost Auntie Cakes. They loved the friendliest, always smiling, Auntie wa cakes and nice juice. My son, who you always had the biggest smile for, said to me, "Aunty cakes is in heaven, laughing and dancing and making cakes". Felicia, you are in heaven. Dancing, singing, laughing, with the angels. Your warmth, smile will never leave me, will never leave us. You were an angel on earth and now, you are with angels in heaven. You touched so many lives and you have left a legacy. To Samara and Misha, Your mum loved you so much.....May our Lord comfort you and strengthen you both in Jesus Mighty name. To Lionel and Brian, God give you strength and comfort as you mourn your sister. Thank you for this tribute platform, allowing us to say goodbye to our friend. To Beatrice, Mum, I met Felicia because I met you. We started the snacks table together, with Felicia at your side. What an organised team you were....that will always be cherished and remembered. May our Lord God,hold your hand, comfort you, encourage you and give you peace. Psalm 34:18 "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit". Rest in peace, Felicia Anne Kibe

My mentor, my friend, and my confidant, you opened the doors of your house, career network, and net worth, allowing me to stand tall on your shoulders as a young, timid advocate. I grew tremendously under your guidance; you were my superior, with whom I could consult on legal issues, a mentor I could depend on for professional growth, and a sister who held my hand in many seasons of my life. In 2018, you shared your vision for access to justice for persons with disabilities. I knew without a shadow of doubt that you could do it. We created the Article 48 Initiative, deriving mandate from Article 48 of the Constitution of Kenya on the right to access justice for all persons. We took on cases no advocate wanted, you camped at Mathare Maximum Prison situated inside the Mathare teaching and referral hospital, where we gave legal advice and representation to persons with mental disabilities held at the pleasure of the president. When the prison guards would deny us entry into the prison, you could bulldoze your way in to access our clients. I remember the time when we sneaked in an affidavit to be signed by one of our clients, who eventually got released and reunited with his family. Our slogan of access justice, change lives was your life purpose. You touched lives across the globe with your noble heart, strong character and relentless pursuit of justice. You pushed to release my purpose, and when I got a job with the Judiciary, you reminded me I had come of age and that doing justice was my calling. Despite the distance that came with my relocation to Mombasa, our calls and voice notes remained constant. You still prayed with me, gave me advice on issues of life, and when it was my turn to receive the gift of motherhood, you were there for me in all ways, and even organised an online baby shower. Early this year, during your holiday vacation at the coast, along with mom and the girls, you stopped by my home to bless my family. I was truly honoured that you made time and, as usual, came bearing gifts; this time it was a beautifully crafted African blanket from Swaziland for my toddler. I am at pains to trust that through this pain and loss, God is still Good and he has the perfect plan. I choose to find comfort in the verse that lived with you, Lamentations 3:22-23: Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed. Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. Go well, my dearest friend, you will forever be in my heart. I promise to always check up on the girls and be there for them to the best of my abilities.

Felicia my friend, I was waiting for days to pass hoping you'd sneak up on us and tell us this is a joke, we shared that dark humour, turns out this is not a joke. You have lived your life entirely and I find myself in deep gratitude for your friendship. I first met you in 2014 and it was quickly clear we shared beliefs and perspectives which is not always the case in this work we do, this work of service to others driven by a belief everyone deserves the best regardless of who they are. One of my favourite memories that solidified our friendship was in 2019, that day Liz, Mila and Fred found ourselves in what I could only term as a stalemate with some humans in this country. I can still see you waving me back into the room after my toilet break and how we were in utter disbelief that the discussions of the last few days were being ignored. Thank you for being one of people with whom we could be human with each other after all the work out there, to be silly, to tell jokes that were safe in our private spaces. Thank you for allowing me to be an auntie to your girls, thank you for the cakes, hospital visits and introduction to new friends. I am sorry this work has been so tough, I am sorry there have not been more people joining in this work and allowing you more peace and rest, I'm sorry the system hasn't been gentle with us as we work to fix it, I'm sorry for the nights you couldn't sleep because of how tired you were. To Samara and Misha, I am sorry your mum is not here physically with you. There may never be a logical explanation for why she left while you were so young. I pray that you are reminded of her words to you as you go through life, that all those conversations you have had with her come through to you when you need them. I pray that you are able to receive love from your family and your mother's friends as you go through life. I pray that your connection to God steadies your paths and gladdens your hearts. To mami and the entire family, thank you for sharing Fela with us, thank you for loving her, thank you for being her support system, her safe place. My friend, I pray you are getting some rest and you're being cheeky and dancing to music wherever you are, visit me in my dreams some time :-)

Today, my dear friend Felicia is being laid to rest. My heart is so heavy, and my mind keeps circling back to the moment I found out, a moment that felt both shocking and, heartbreakingly, almost missed. I had just come from court and was stepping into a meeting when the news came. In my line of work, you learn to compartmentalize, to put profound emotion aside and focus on your duty. But holding the weight of this loss while trying to focus on the agenda felt surreal. The world just kept moving, demanding I function. And the cruelest part? I had already seen the announcement. It was in a church WhatsApp group, a church you introduced me to. I scrolled right past it, not knowing many members there, never for a second imagining the name I was glossing over was yours. My Felicia. The one who always looked out for me. It makes me think of our last messages. I’d sent a note, just checking in the way we always did, assuming I’d hear back when you had a moment. That was our rhythm: no pressure, just a steady, reliable presence. The fact that she didn’t reply should have been a clue, but I just thought you were just busy with life. It hurts my heart to know now that you were unwell. So many of you knew her for her dependability, supportiveness and loyal to her core. But for me, she was an absolute rock during one of the hardest times of my life. When I was lost and scared about my health, Felicia turned worry into action. She immediately sent me her doctor's info, sat with me to talk through a meal plan, and made me feel like I wasn't alone in it. She gave me not just sympathy, but a way forward. She had a way of doing that turning worry into action. Felicia, I will carry your wisdom with me every single day. I will think of you with every healthy choice I make. My heart goes out to her family and all who loved her. The world has lost a truly special and radiant light. Rest in peace, my beautiful friend. Thank you for everything.

This meeting came to memory after a whole week of blackout in confusion for your loss Fela. I hope your daughters can see the strength and wisdom you embodied in these photos. Fare thee well my sister!
