I am very patient. I take pride in being patient with my husband, my children, my grandchildren. I was patient about my career.

Eva Marie Saint was an American actress of rare grace and depth, a performer whose career stretched nine extraordinary decades — from the golden era of live television through Hollywood's most storied decades and into the twenty-first century. Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, to Quaker parents John Merle Saint and Eva Marie Saint, she grew up in Delmar, New York, a naturally shy, reserved girl who would one day command the attention of cinema's greatest directors. She discovered her passion for acting at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, graduating in 1946 — where her classmates nicknamed her the "Sweater Queen," a detail she recounted with warmth for the rest of her life. After graduating, she joined NBC as a page and radio actress, honing her craft in live television dramas throughout the late 1940s, and deepening it still further at the Actors Studio in New York. Broadway called in 1953, when she appeared in Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful, winning the Outer Critics Circle Special Award and drawing the eye of director Elia Kazan. The following year, Kazan cast her opposite Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront. She became only the fourth performer ever to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress on their first screen role — a triumph she recalled with her characteristic humor, having given birth to her son Darrell just two days after accepting the Oscar. Her 1959 performance as the enigmatic Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest became one of cinema's most enduring portraits of cool sophistication. Hitchcock's direction was unconventional but instinctive: "Lower your voice, don't use your hands, and look directly into Cary Grant's eyes at all times," he told her — and from that exterior, a spy was born. Throughout her career, Saint worked with directors Kazan, Hitchcock, Fred Zinnemann, and Otto Preminger, and starred alongside Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, Warren Beatty, and Gregory Peck. Yet she made a deliberate choice: "I was having children, I was turning things down and my agent said, 'Eva Marie, you'll never be a superstar' and I said, 'I don't want to be a superstar.'" She prioritized family above all, maintaining a 65-year marriage to director Jeffrey Hayden from 1951 until his death in 2016. Her television work brought a Primetime Emmy Award in 1990 for People Like Us, and she continued acting into her nineties, receiving a standing ovation at the 90th Academy Awards in 2018. She celebrated her 100th birthday on July 4, 2024, surrounded by four generations of family. Eva Marie Saint died on October 6, 2026, at the age of 102, the oldest living Academy Award winner and one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood's Golden Age. She left behind a legacy defined not by ambition, but by patience, integrity, and the rare courage to choose depth over fame.

She always tried to schedule her location work during the summer so my sister and I could join her.

Not only does she provide the requisite icy sex appeal as Eve Kendall, a shadowy secret agent, but she also proves to be much more than a standard damsel in distress.

A marvel of carefully modulated emotions, alternately delicate and fiery in her scenes with Brando, and especially in her confrontation with Karl Malden's waterfront priest, Saint's performance catapulted her to fame and earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1954.
