Rest in heaven brother-in-law.

When you were assigned to work with Eugene, you knew your day was going to be better. It would be full of laughs in the news van, a little station gossip and always, always a positive attitude. You would also not have to worry about getting the story right - Eugene was a pro and helped you develop it by shooting the right video. To come to the realization that Eugene will never stick his head in your door cracking a joke or giving you a hug is hard to accept. My prayers are for the Stanback family. My memories will be tucked in my heart.

Eugene had a natural ability to make everyone around him feel good. Perhaps that was due to his sense of humor - which never left him whatever the day presented - or his easy going approach to life. He chose a career in a high stress occupation, but he was always “steady as she goes”. Never flustered. Never agitated. Always cool. And always with a smile, maybe a jab or two, and a laugh. Eugene and I almost drowned while covering a flooding story in Indiana years ago. Serious at the time, but we were able to laugh about it later. I will miss that laugh and the spirit of a man whose core was forever positive. Paul Meincke

I worked with Eugene at WLS-7 in the 1990s. He was always a joy to work with. He was kind, sweet and always a consummate professional with an infectious laugh. May he Rest In Peace . Prayers to his loving family.

My sincere condolences to Eugene’s family. And all of you who worked with him for decades, his second family. Eugene was a gift. His infectious smile and laughter and Poor attempts at Speaking Spanish made me laugh always. He shot my first demo reel and cheered on my career, long distance. We kept in touch over the years and I will miss him terribly. Memories of our friendship will always remain in my heart. Rest In Peace my dear amigo.

Dear family of my old friend Eugene. I worked with Eugene at Ch 7 for almost 40 years and he brought a joy to my life that I will always treasure. Only Eugene could help me find humor in the most difficult of situations. Gene was the one and only guy at Ch 7 that everyone loved. The news business can be very difficult at times but Eugene was our sunshine on those many cloudy days. I will miss him forever. His big smile, his laugh, his constant chatter and his warmth, which was usually hidden beneath his funloving ribbing. Eugene was a very good man, a very good friend and he will be a special part of my memory for as long as I live. Farewell old buddie I will miss you. Frank Mathie, or as you always called me, "Shorty".
