Eric Von Villas, beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend to many, passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021. His carefree, no-regrets attitude was the very definition of "living life to the fullest." For all the wild stories that are going to be shared about him, there are just as many that showed his caring and thoughtful heart and love for connecting people. The OU/TX weekend was Eric's favorite holiday, and the Oklahoma Sooners held a special place in his heart. He spent a good portion of his college career as part of the Pride of Oklahoma band where he met his wife, Erin, and many great friends. Please consider donating in Eric's name to help support music at the university: https://giving.oufoundation.org/OnlineGivingWeb/Giving/OnlineGiving/VonVillasMem. However, after living in Texas most of his life, Eric also understood the OU/TX rivalry runs deep, which is why he would also encourage you to instead donate to another great cause like animal rescue in the "Charitable Donations" section. We value your stories, memories, and photos of Eric and would love for you to share those at this link: https://www.storyworth.com/question/a5cc22a6-5eaa-4670-83cb-3f3df67c131c "Beginnings are usually scary, and endings are usually sad, but it's everything in between that makes it all worth living." -Bob Marley

I honestly never thought I would be eulogizing Eric Von Villas. I was convinced that Eric would be fighting it out with the cockroaches and Keith Richards in the end. But in the real world that just isn't the way it goes. Eric was amazingly generous. Anything he had he would share. If you needed a place to stay? Instantly, "man, stay at my place". Instantly. Need a ride? "I've got you." In college we'd get off work late at night and swing by his place. He'd just throw a couple of steaks on the grill without a thought and we'd sit down and have a couple of beers and talk. He had that natural empathy. It wasn't forced, it was genuine concern and care for the people around him. It didn't matter if you were a CEO or the janitor. He wanted to make sure you were okay, to see if you needed anything, to lift your spirits. If we hadn't seen each other in a while Eric would call me up. "Where are we going to meet?" Not "do you want to get together?" It was give me a date and a time. He knew if it was open ended I'd never do it. He'd force me to commit. We'd meet up at the Fox and Hound and have a few drinks, talk about the things that were good in our lives, work through the things that were bothering us. He knew I needed that and went out of his way to make sure I got it. I miss you brother. Much love.

Eric Von Villas believed in you. He wanted to know your story - not where you worked or how you could help him get ahead, but what made you tick, what were your dreams, how he could better connect with you. Eric burned brightly with compassion and strength of character. He never carried malice toward anyone and always saw the best in everyone he met. A more welcoming soul I have never known nor likely will. It feels so wrong to write all of this in the past tense since I still cannot believe he is gone. I knew V when we were in college. He was a couple of years behind me at OU. We were friends but mostly I knew him by the universally high regard he inspired in people that I respected (and his reputation for hosting epic parties). It was not until my wife Julieta and I moved to Dallas in 2006 that we became close. As he does by instinct and disposition, he welcomed us warmly to Dallas and into his life. His generous spirit and true kindness made our transition easier and I will always be grateful for his friendship. V understood friendship like few others. I saw him make great sacrifices for friends in need without hesitation, and with never any expectation for anything in return. He was one of the few people I could count on to be there for any need. We all fail to be our best selves in many ways at many times, but he was one of the rare great ones that always tried to do the right thing by everyone. I admired V's charisma. He was a natural leader. He elevated everyone around him. He loved to laugh and had a passion for fun. Eric loved to tease you, and he could be brutally honest when principle was at stake, but he always spoke from a place of love. He was a real mensch. I've tried to write this a dozen times. It never feels adequate. There are no words for how unfair it is that he has been taken from us, how much impotent rage at the universe fills me when I consider what we have lost. But I take comfort that the memory of him will continue to inspire me to do better, to be a better friend, to give more people the benefit of the doubt, and to live life with both passion and integrity.

My brother is gone. It is cold comfort for us, the bereft, that we had the excellent fortune to have such a bright light in our lives for the time we had him or he had us. I already know there's mirth to be had in the days to come when I'll pause during the height of ecstasy and amusement and wonder where you are, V. Having known you as well as I did, I promise I won't linger too long being sad about that- a tear or two and then back to the laughter. Speaking of laughter, the first time we met was a laugh, for sure. That was definitely an example of me laughing at you, but among your many talents was overcoming a bad first impression. A year later started over two decades of laughing with each other, and even when it wasn't totally laughing with each other, it ended up where we were laughing with each other over something stupid arising out of temper, stupidity, or mutual concern ie how we interact with our family when we're at our best. Before I really got to know Eric, his gregarious nature and smooth banter was incredibly impressive to me. It wasn't something I remotely possessed, but I also knew it was the same with V. I had inferred what the first few years of his life was like before he very confidently told me how that all played out. He had earned the right to be as cocky/confident as he wanted to be, but he also was quick to point out to me how privileged he was to be born into his family. I cannot think of a time in the years I knew him where he punched down or didn't treat friends or perfect strangers with the kind of compassion and humility that naturally flows from someone's realization that they were fortunate and that the best thing to do was pay it forward. Eric, you were a good egg through and through. I am extremely proud that we were friends, and I'd be astonished if any of your friends or family don't feel likewise. I hold myself in higher esteem just for the fact we were close, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who feels impoverished now that you're gone. I'll look forward to the random recall of all the good times we had together, and I'll miss you until I shuffle off this mortal coil too, buddy. Godspeed. 😢

Knowing Eric has been one of the greatest friendships of my life. He was a man of great character and compassion. Because of that he was the center of attention no matter where he was. People loved being around him and it showed in the turnout to his gatherings. He had a unique ability to make you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He is already greatly missed, but remembered in our stories.
