Evan Liu
Obituary Emma S. Liu, a loving, kind, and thoughtful woman, passed away peacefully of natural causes on April 7, 2023, in San Diego, California. Born on December 1, 1933, in Guangdong Province, China, Emma lived a life filled with music, education, and devotion to her family. Emma was a highly accomplished and trained classical soprano who studied Music (Voice) at the National University of Tainan in Taiwan. In 1959, she came to the United States for graduate school, where she earned a master’s degree in Deaf Education from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Throughout her life, Emma's love for music and singing led her to perform in public recitals, as part of local singing groups, and in church choirs. As a long-time educator of the deaf, Emma built a career dedicated to helping young people reach their full potential. But the real legacy of Emma’s life was the energy she poured into her friends and family. She met the love of her life, Chi-Sheng Liu, when they were just children, living through turbulent war-torn years in China. They both moved to Taiwan as teens and then emigrated to the United States to pursue advanced degrees. They got married in 1960, and spent 54 devoted years together, before Chi-Sheng passed from complications of Parkinson’s Disease in 2014. During their years together, they lived a life full of love and adventure, especially in their retirement years, when they traveled all over the globe with like-minded friends. Oh, what fun they had! She is survived by her grateful and loving children, Evan Y Liu (Donna Liu), Ellen A. Liu (Sheldon Furst), and Laura H. Liu (Kenneth Pomerantz); her grandchildren, Kirstin Liu (Patrick Stegall), Christopher Liu, Brenna Liu (Tyler Hine), Robert Liu, Lauren Furst, Andrew Furst, Cara Pomerantz, and Jonathan Pomerantz; and her great-grandchildren, Bear Stegall and Emmeline Stegall. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on through the countless lives she touched and the beautiful music she shared with the world. In lieu of flowers, we suggest donations to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, or St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church of Poway, CA.
