I was Emily’s nurse in 2015 when she was first diagnosed. I would come to her home weekly, we eventually grew close and we went from a nurse/patient relationship to friends. When she “graduated” from my palliative program, we remained friends and we would talk often, and I would help her navigate the crazy medical world. I met Irie when she just turned 2, she was a joy, and she loved Disney. So I would always bring her a gift when I went to Disneyland, as well as go live on Facebook during “it’s a small world”, as Emily would join every time and we would “chat” on my live. It became a tradition, and I loved making her smile. Laughing was Emily’s favorite thing in the world, and she and my husband Jim bonded as she thought he was hilarious and she really egged him on

***so I tried to post this but ended up posting it as a comment. Then I laughed at myself for being so technically challenged while also putting my heart out and thought, Emily would probably laugh at it too…so that’s good *** I can’t believe it’s been almost a month and I still don’t know the words to say. Emily is someone who literally always made me laugh. Even at things that weren’t supposed to be funny. We didn’t see much of each other that often, but when we did it never felt like we were distant friends. I love Emily and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to call her friend. And it’s no surprise she gave birth to an awesome and equally hilarious and beautiful little girl. Her love, laughter, joy, and kindness lives on through Irie. All my love to the Montoya family and of course to her other half Jenene. I love you Em.

I met Emily when I was lucky enough to have Irie in my TK class. I found Emily to be hilarious, hard-working, empathetic, loving, kind, smart, patient and, above all, totally devoted to her daughter. As I have known her over the last several years, that opinion has not changed. I was in awe of Emily’s strength and resilience , her wicked sense of humor and her huge loving heart. I always looked forward to seeing her and chatting, laughing with her over her silly tee shirts and hearing her endless Irie stories. Oh, how she loved her sweet girl! I am utterly heart-broken to hear of Emily’s passing. I know she wanted to be here for Irie as long as she could, and I know how much she sacrificed these last few years. I can’t believe she is really gone, though I know her spirit will live on as long as those who knew her and loved her remember her. I will miss her smile and her upbeat personality, and seeing her joy as she worked with all the kids here at school. I hope that Irie and Emily’s family are able to take some comfort in knowing that Emily is/was one of those people who truly brought love and light into so many people’s lives, simply by just being herself. Rest In Peace, sweet friend.
