Ella's Niece
Ella Mae Wallace
April 8th, 1940 - August 11th, 2021
April 8th, 1940 - August 11th, 2021
Ella Mae Hicks Wallace was the first born child of Clyde HIcks, Sr. and Lillie Mae Evans Hicks. As a young child, she spent an enormous amount of time with her grandfather, Samuel Moss Evans, whom she adored...he bought her very first bicycle and glass doll. The admiration of her grandfather continued many years, even after his death.
Ella was educated in the Voorhees school system. Education was something that was embedded in her by her family. She continued her education at Voorhees Jr. College focusing on Secretarial Science.
Once finishing junior college, Ella left South Carolina for New York. She found work and began her life as an adult. This is where she met and married Capal Fitz Arthur "Jack" Wallace in 1964. Unfortunately, Jack passed away in 1972. Ella held her head up and pressed on.
Eventually, she returned to South Carolina, never remarrying or having children of her own. Being the big sister that she was, she had a hand in raising her nieces and nephews. She took the time to learn and in turn teach them who was family; which by her account was a good chunk of Bamberg County.
Always the caregiver, she assisted her elderly family members when they needed her. For her, caregiving was a GIVEN...she just did it.
Ella did a lot and was always in the midst of just doing it. She worked and retired from the Denmark-Olar School system, was a devoted member of the Rome Baptist Missionary Church, a member of multiple choirs in the church, a member of the Eastern Star organization, and a few other groups.
In her free time, she loved to embroider, crochet, sew, and do all types of puzzles.
She will forever be missed as the loving, strong-willed, well-dressed woman with a smile on her face.
