Deaconess (Mrs.) Elizabeth Nndem
May 21st, 1940 - June 28th, 2025
May 21st, 1940 - June 28th, 2025
And I heard the voice from heaven saying to me: Write; Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them
BIRTH AND PARENTAGE:
Deaconess Elizabeth Nndem was born on 21st May, 1940 into the Royal Family of Obong (Elder) Sampson Mbek Anako, the 18th Eteidung of Etinan, of Ekpuk Nung Umo Etukudoh, Etinan in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, and the mother was late Madam Rachael Sampson Mbek Anako (Nee Rachael Inyang Etukudoh Akpaette) of Ekpuk Nung Akpaette, the Udoh Idung of Etinan, in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. She was the second of five children in her family.
EDUCATION:
She received her primary education at Ndon Eyo Group School in 1945, where her father was the headmaster. She later attended Minya Group School, Oniong N.A., and finally John Kirk Memorial School, where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate with distinction.
She got admitted to Cornelia Connelly College, Afaha Oku, Uyo, where she passed the prestigious West African School Certificate in 1957. She then proceeded to University College Hospital, Ibadan, for her pre-nursing and nursing training from 1958 to 1961. The late Professor Ambrose Alli was her godfather at the time. She attended her Midwifery course in England, United Kingdom, from 1961 to 1963, and while schooling there, she lived with Mrs. Lester, being the only black girl in the environment at that time. She later left for Washington, D.C., USA, for further training. Having completed her Senior Level in Nursing, she was employed at Washington Hospital USA and then returned to Nigeria, where she worked at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Lagos, for 31 years as a Clinical Instructor, Teaching Medical Students and Nurses in her ward and beyond, preparing them for the challenges ahead in their professions.
MARITAL LIFE:
The young and beautiful lady later married her beloved, the handsome engineer Nice Etukudoh Nndem, from Ikot Ebo, in 1963 in Washington, D.C., USA. The union received customary blessings and permission from their parents, according to the rules and regulations of the Qua Iboe Church. Their marriage was blessed with four wonderful children: Obong Ubong Bassey Nndem, Obong Aniekan Bassey Taiwo, Obong Kingsley Obong Nndem, and Uko Qunicy Nndem, as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom are alive to mourn her passing.
CHRISTIAN LIFE:
Born into a family of Qua Iboe Church Faith, she was enrolled and baptized accordingly. She also lived with early missionaries in Etinan and gained significant exposure, which prepared her for her future assignment. She was among the first set of Deaconesses recognized in the Qua Iboe Church, Sure-lere, Lagos, for their outstanding performances in 1985.
SOCIAL LIFE:
She travelled extensively all over the globe, visiting her children and friends. It was in one of her visits that her beloved husband died on her shoulders in London in 2001. She brought the deceased to Etinan for burial according to traditional rites.
She liked singing and dancing so very much. She welcomed everyone to her home even at midnight. She helped people from other tribes, took care of orphans, widows, and even those experiencing homelessness. She never liked to see people suffering but extended her hands of help and friendship to all, where testimonies abound. She was a source of inspiration and encouragement to people in need and to those who lost their bearings in life. Although she is dead, thank God, her eyes were not dim nor her natural vigour diminished. She was an Icon of Humanity.
TRANSITION:
After a life richly lived in service, compassion, faith, and purpose, Deaconess Elizabeth Nndem peacefully transitioned into glory on 28th June, 2025, surrounded by love and the comforting presence of family.
Her passing marks the end of an era, yet the beginning of her eternal rest in the bosom of the Lord, whom she served so faithfully. She fought a good fight, kept the faith, and finished her course. Even in her final moments, she radiated grace, peace, and unwavering trust in God.
While her physical presence will be deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched with her kindness, strength, wisdom, and selfless love. We take comfort in the words of scripture, knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
She now rests in perfect peace, crowned with the reward of a faithful servant. Heaven has truly gained an angel.

GOODNIGHT AUNTY To us, you were not just an aunt. You were a mother, a grandmother, a confidant, and a friend. You had this rare gift of making people feel cared for and deeply loved — even if they were not your biological children. From the very beginning, Aunty treated me like a daughter. She was always so concerned, not just about me, but about my children too. When my first daughter, Mirabel, went off to the UK for her A-levels, Aunty’s first daughter, Ubong, became her guardian, and in that moment, Aunty became her grandma. Not in name alone, but in deed. She remembered Mirabel’s birthdays, sent her thoughtful cards, and asked about her often. Even after the A-level programme ended, Aunty never stopped checking in. She followed Mirabel’s journey all the way through university, always showing that same unwavering care. When Aunty returned from England, we - her many “daughters” from other mothers gave her a new name: Aunty London. It suited her perfectly. Stylish, graceful, and full of life, Aunty had a flair for fashion and self-care. Her nails were always perfectly manicured — never once did I see her with chipped polish. She was always effortlessly put together. It was just who she was. In December 2024, my husband and I visited Aunty in her beautiful country home in Etinan. True to form, she insisted on hosting us herself - warm, generous, and full of joy. We left with hearts full and promised to return more often in 2025. Now, that visit will come earlier than we planned - this August, though, under a very different circumstance. True to her stylish way of doing things, Aunty quietly exited while I was away visiting Mirabel. She did not wait for me to come back and break the good news that God has added another great grand daughter to her from Mirabel. Aunty, thank you for sharing your life with us while you were here. Thank you for showing us what it truly means to love one another like yourself. Thank you for embodying the spirit of African community parenting - generous, wide-reaching, and unconditional. Thank you for your soft strength, your wisdom, and your beauty - inside and out. You gave so much of your time and love to all of us. And we will carry your love with us, always. Rest well, Aunty. We will always remember you. Asiere! Aunty London. Ime Ephraim Inyang
Frank Okon. London.
May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen

August 13th, 2025 Mr. Kingsley Ndem Etinan Akwa Ibom State Dear Kingsley, Message of Condolence I write on behalf of I and my family to commiserate with you and all members of the late Ndem’s family on the glorious exit of your beloved mother and grandmother, Dcns Mrs Elizabeth Ndem. Late Ma Ndem (as we used to call her) was a loving mother and a devoted Christian. She extended her love to us during our marriage in Qua Iboe Church, Surulere, Lagos, and thereafter. She remains a legend that will always be remembered for her high level of commitment to her family and devotion to the Church. As you mourn her demise, find comfort, strength, and inspiration in the good name and rich legacy she has left behind. She has fought a good fight and has finished well. Glory! Hallelujah! It is therefore our prayer that the virtues she lived and worked for will be sustained by you and the entire family. Please do accept our sincere condolences as we pray that the Good Lord will keep the family in love and unity in Jesus’ Name, Amen. Elder (Pst) Sunday & Pst (Mrs) Ima-lma Essien, Lagos, Nigeria.

A TRIBUTE TO A LOVELY AND IRREPLACEABLE MOTHER. My original Nma as I fondly called you. It is with deep pains in my entire Being I and my family penned this tribute on your passing. Till now we are still in shock. We met only when you retired home to the Etinan community. Ever since you knew me, for some very strange reasons beyond the weight of words you did not only accept me like you would your biological son, you brought me into your family and treated me specially, not minding am from a far off tribe and State. You stood in for me in every way possible. Nma, you were a brave woman who took upon herself the burdens of everyone and anyone you encountered and even the entire community at large can testify to this. You were a huge blessing to humanity. You helped where you could directly and where you could not, you spared no encouraging words nor prayers. You were indeed a lovely and irreplaceable wonderful mother. You offered wise counsels as best as a good mother always would. When you learned of some of my challenges at some point, you never ceased to call and prayed for me. You were my spiritual pillar to rest on and a beam of light to walk my paths through my darks. It's extremely sad to imagine all of that will be no more. Your impact in my life in particular during this short time is engraved in my soul eternally. Should there be reincarnation, I will opt to come as your direct biological son. If no reincarnation, then as Christians, we share and profess our faith in One God and Savior Jesus Christ, in the Resurrection of the Dead and in the Communion of the saints. As during my few visits to the house, when we had warm discussions from life, politics to good Christian life in a warm atmosphere and also had meals, we shall be reunited on the last day and continue to share the same at the feet of our Lord Jesus Christ when we shall meet to part no more. Until then my sweet mother, my original mama, rest in power and rest in perfect peace. Amen Adieu Nma Edo State bids you farewell. Your son Alexander Odianosen Okoh Edo State
