Edwin "Mr. Ed" Mayer, Jr.
February 3rd, 1936 - August 5th, 2025
February 3rd, 1936 - August 5th, 2025
On August 5th, 2025, after 89 full years, Edwin “Ed” Mayer peacefully completed his earthly journey at his home, with family by his side.
As a “jack of all trades, master of many,” Ed drank deep from the cup of life. He was born in Queens, New York, then moved to Westchester with his family. He played high school football, and for his college team while studying for an architecture degree. His formal studies were cut short when the United States Army called him to serve; he was stationed in Germany from 1959 to 1961 with the 545th Ordnance Company.
He was married to Gail for 25 years, living in the Throggs Neck section of The Bronx where they raised two boys, Eddie and Rob, who inherited his tinkerer, DIY spirit. After a wide array of employment experiences, he accepted a job with the City of New York as an electrical inspector and team manager. He was known among friends and family as an excellent jeweler, a bow hunter, a scuba dive instructor, and a ballroom dancer.
In 2002 Ed retired from The City and moved across the continent to southeast Alaska where he spent days kayaking, fishing from his rowboat “Yacht,” dredging for gold, and peacefully hanging out by the creek in his yard. He became an avid fan of picking up treasures that “just needed a little work” from the curbs of Douglas Highway. And he found a treasured community of friends (human and canine) who shared his love of walking Sandy Beach and his fascination with the old Treadwell Mine ruins.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Gail Mayer Black, elder son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Nikki Mayer of Flagstaff, Arizona, and his younger son, Rob Mayer of Juneau, Alaska; granddaughters Cassy Slusser and Avarie Mayer, grandsons Elias and Tyler Ward, and great grandson Dean Slusser. He was preceded in death by his brothers Tom and Robert Mayer, grandson Ross Mayer, and his canine companion, Shadow.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Ed’s life at the Log Cabin at Savikko Park on August 17th, 2025, from 7:30 to 10 am.
Ed will be laid to rest beside his family in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York. A service will be held in the cemetery’s chapel in early October. Date and time will be determined soon.

Ed Mayer quite a guy, spent several years diving with him on many occasions, always an enjoyable experience.Worked with him at our local dive shop,he was "Mr.Fit It", a tinkerer and a fixer, never said no always willing to give it a try. We went our separate ways after 5-6 yrs. but got to see "EdinAlaska" several yrs ago while on an Alaskan cruise, good to hook up for several hours that day seeing the sights with a "local" as a guide. Sorry to hear of his passing but he lived life to his liking and along with being an all around good guy he's someone I'm glad I got to cross paths with.

Gosh! Seems like yesterday when we were all young & taking the world by storm. I met your Dad @ Cougar Sports after I signed up for a scuba course back in the early 70’s. He knew all the instructors & hence most of the students. He was a good friend of my husband, Jim Gott. The fact that I also lived in Throggs Neck (the Bronx, NYC) & knew some of his friends over in Silver Beach was a bonus. He was an instructor too & also ran some trips. I will never forget freezing my ass off on the Isle of Shoals trip in Maine. But at least we came home with tons of wonderful scallops - yum! He was like a big brother to us single gals. Here he is pictured with (from L to R) Pat Hevessey, Marilyn Foley & myself - now Terry Gott. Both he and his wife Gail attended our wedding back in 1979 & he & the family visited us in Florida back in the early 80’s. Time flies!! Ed was a great friend and very talented, innovative engineer but also as an artisan jeweler. Ed designed some black coral we brought back from Honduras into a beautiful pendant that I still wear today. Fair winds to you Ed as you embark on this next Chapter.

Ed was basically the Mayor of Sandy Beach with his Labrador buddy (can’t recall name at the moment). Living above the beach and having dogs myself, I always knew I’d see Ed down there if I got up and moving early enough. I believe the two of us solved every possible house maintenance problem while strolling down the beach together. I miss those chats.

So happy to know that Ed had a Good, Long Life. I was married to him for 25 yrs. It was as expected in those times. Good; my great sons and at times challenging. No regrets. He was always talented, as stated.
