Edward Bernard Kissam, M.D.

July 12th, 1925 - May 30th, 2019

July 12th, 1925 - May 30th, 2019

Born in Embry, South Carolina on the Edisto River, Edward B. Kissam was part of the "Greatest Generation." He served his country in both the European and Pacific theatres during World War II, first as a Merchant Marine, and later as a United States Marine. He was graduated from the University of Florida and received his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. When he opened his practice in orthopaedic surgery in 1960 it was the first integrated office in Gainesville, FL. A technically brilliant surgeon, and innovator in his field, he was one of the first in the country to successfully adopt the microscope for reconstructive surgery. Coach Ray Graves selected him as the team physician for the University of Florida's sports teams from 1960 to 1969. Doc, as he was known to many, especially enjoyed working and traveling with the University of Florida Gators football team. In retirement, he was a Guardian Ad Litem and a mentor for the Gainesville Police Department's Juvenile Justice program. He was also a longtime docent for the University of Florida's Whitney Laboratory in St. Augustine. He was an accomplished sailor, and after obtaining his captain's license he sailed extensively throughout the Caribbean and Bermuda. Most of all, our Pop saw the world with a poet's eye, and with an open heart. He truly wished everyone well, and his love of life was infectious. His greatest joy was his family and he was our rock. His legacy stems from his kind, selfless, exuberant spirit that inspired all who knew him. As he was fond of saying, "Love is the bond that holds us together." He is survived by his five children, Babette Kissam (Steve Cuffe) of Jacksonville Beach, Edward B. "Bart" Kissam Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Katherine "Trina" Griffiths (Tim) of Marietta, GA, Benjamin "Tread" Kissam (Carroll) of St. Augustine, and Christopher "Topher" Kissam (Kimberly) of Altamonte Springs; brother, John B. Kissam (Pat) of Clemson; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara Ivey (Metze), and four of his siblings. The family is holding a private service. All wishing to pay respects may leave a personal message under "Memories & Condolences" above. Donations can be made in his name to Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, K-12 Education Program, by check or online. My heart goes out to you and your family. Although I don't know exactly what to say, I want you to know that I am with you in thought and prayer, and wish you comfort and peace as you remember your Pop. May he rest in eternal and unending peace, and be carried on through his children and grandchildren.

Bart, Trina, Babette, Tread, and Topher. My heart goes out to all of you. The obituary for your father was a great tribute to him and to your love for him. May his presence never leave you, his love always sustain you, and memories of him bring a smile to your faces. God bless you all and your families.

Dr. Kissam treated me as one of his own. From a 3 weeks Bahamas sailing trip, countless times dove hunting in Brooker, fishing and trips to Cresent Beach. This world was a better place because of this loving, caring man. I know doc and coach Graves are enjoying many memories of Gator football. The entire Kissam family is part of my best childhood memories. Love to you all. David Huntsman

The thing that I loved the most about Edward Kissam was his ability to see the positive and the best in the people around him. He was part of the greatest generation in character, with a huge helping of the right stuff, standing up for what was right as an early pioneer in his orthopedic practice, in fighting segregation in doing what was right, and in helping people. Always helping people. He was always welcoming and loving, with a big smile on his face no matter what. My best memories of him were sitting around kitchen tables, in Gainesville or at the beach, a loving father and later a loving grandfather. I was so fortunate to be readily welcomed into some of those wonderful dinner conversations. I am so sorry, Babette, Trina, Bart, Tread, Topher, and your families, for your loss. His passing has left a large rent in the fabric of life.

Growing up in Gainesville meant growing up with the Kissam "kids" so of course I was fortunate to know their dad -thinking of all you and especially my dear friend Trina who embodies a sense of adventure, joyful living and a moral compass. This quote by Mark Twain reminds me of Dr Kissam & family "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore! Dream! Discover!"
