WE KIDS WERE NEVER AS YOUNG AS THEY WERE (to Duane L. Bay) They raised such serious children, These Next-Ken-Gens who were busy Gamboling about with their sibs, Introducing people around, Dating, going to folks' weddings--- Too post-war to do much sedate. When I first remember Unc Duane, He's driving a jeep, lightly armed, With Bowie knife and revolver Against the Ozark's feral pigs And venomous snakes--runner thin, Especially compared to me--- And glam as a lead movie star. Admittedly, not quite redwood tall--- To a small nephew on Ozark tour Oak tree height seemed well within call-- Hero worship was always a lure. Westerling, he moved toward ocean. Helping California regild And reinvent itself from schools On up, with pragmatic magic-- Through luck, he'd lodged in his true state-- Like him, it spoke with natural accent, Part Sequoia, academic, San Andreas, Hollywood, and kelp. I mean, his kids played, like soccer. What was that about--Austria, Mexico? Or probably, just trend-setting, chic. He played or coached most team games. Then, harbored for decades in his (Eventually for him and kin) Mother school, Stanford's, shadow, As offspring surrounded the Bay Even unto far Hawaii--- A solo of desegregation's hymn He sang amid the snarling of foes. His prior musiced prize, an oboe gem, Waltzed from Austria, for John had gamely chose To grow a new timbre on the clan's stem, Then passed the woodwind to which Lanette rose. Duane's gift deepened as he traveled West, Not perfect, but with progressive, upward zest. Splashing to the urgent Pacific's beloved brim Where golden estate takes its bath, He ran, he walked the land's steep rim, Waving on toward surf's silver path. Geoff Garwick, November, 2020

I truly enjoyed the company of Duane and Mary. Favorite memories involve Stanford's women's basketball games. They were both passionate about them and very supportive. I thought I was cheering loudly but they had me beat. And one last memory was of being hugged tightly by Duane last year. I'm a big girl and still he nearly lifted me off the ground. Such a kind, loving man. Both he and Mary did so many great things for others. Their doors and hearts were always open. 💞

From Fran Liu, I heard your dad passed away. It always is sad To lose a significant family member but he certainly Had a long, productive, full life. He made a positive Difference in his professional career and provided An environment where all of you could thrive in Your own way. It is hard to believe that I'd known him for fifty seven years. I think of him and your Mom as active Christians. They Lived their faith, providing a safe harbor for many people, Including me. They effortlessly folded international students, friends And relatives into your lively family life. I will miss them. Love, Fran

Some months after Mary's passing, I visited Duane. We sat in the big recliners in the living room and he regaled me with stories, all focused on how lucky he had been in life. I've been lucky in life, too, in many ways thanks to Duane and his family. I am lucky to have known him, and for so long.

From Brian Anderson: Louise, Alfred, Duane, and John, My wife Michelle and I wanted to express our deepest condolences on the death of your father. I came to UniLu almost 40 years ago as a graduate student and was quickly drawn into the whole UniLu family, including Duane and Mary. We went through some difficult years there, at a time when I served as Council President and questioned whether we were going to survive as a church, but the fellowship we felt as a group was what helped bring us through that difficult time. Through it all, Duane provided wisdom and humor in roughly equal measure, and I'm not sure if we could have made it through without him and Mary. About 10 years later, I became engaged, and Michelle and I decided to get married at Memorial Church because of the number of guests we expected. Then the Loma Prieta Earthquake hit, and we had to scramble to change our plans for our wedding 9 months later. Duane and Mary, among others, encouraged us to have our wedding at UniLu, and to think of the UniLu family as a team that would support us through the wedding planning since both our families were not local. We wouldn't have had nearly as nice a gathering without them, and we truly blessed to have their support. A few years later, when I had finished graduate school and Michelle and I had moved to San Diego for her graduate school, she needed to do research for her Ph.D. in San Francisco and was struggling to figure out where she would live during that few months. Once again, your parents opened their hearts to us and offered Michelle a room during her research. It was a blessing, not only in terms of having a roof, but in having the UniLu family around once again. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
