Talking with a co-worker after the memorial I mentioned that Doug was "the thing" that made me choose Microsoft and the CloudFit team. He was caring, laser-focused on growing my career, and always checking in to make sure that I was healthy and happy in all facets of life. Our conversations ranged from investing, to how good a Tim-Tam slam might be with a White Russian, to how difficult it is to watch the people who raised us lose their memories and fade away. I only met Doug in-person once... there is so much about him that I don't know, and his absence is still painful. Our conversation remains pinned in Teams, even though the title has now changed to "Just me". There is so much good advice in there, and encouraging words. Every day I see that pinned conversation and it is a reminder to keep on crushing it, and make every day count. Doug, thank you for your compassion, leadership, and friendship. It will not be forgotten.

We knew each other only for something over 2 years but you made it feel like it was forever. I am going to miss our morning competitions of who gets first to the office and then lengthy discussion about family, work, team, or any topic which felt important to us at that moment. You were the source of endless positive energy, always present no matter what, and always smiling and bringing light when others were losing hope. I am going to miss you, buddy, and will always carry you in my heart.

Doug definitely leaves a void. A great collaborator (always pulling us together to come up with new ideas and try stuff), insightful (finding a new way to make progress with teams that had very different goals), caring (really took the time to get to know people, even those who thought we would only be working with him on brief projects), and genuine (there was no pretense--he was authentic in everything)... Doug is already missed and will continue to be a good memory and inspiration to us all.

I met Doug at a random meeting that I had set up to learn more about his org. I was really expecting to get blown off or given minimal information, but Doug really explained everything there was to know about his parent org, a lot more detail than I was expecting. It was such a positive experience that I remember it vividly even today, more than 2 years later! I soon learned that was just who he was. Deeply respectful of anyone and everyone, always looking for the positives, always looking for a better outcome! The one thing I admired the most about him was his ability to find something genuine to compliment a person on. It was never generic “Good job!”s, the compliments were always on something specific that most people might not have even noticed. I was on the receiving end of many of those many times, where I would step back, reflect and think to myself, “he’s right, that was not a normal everyday thing I did there!”. He knew how to make someone feel special and how to motivate people. I naively asked him if finding the positives and being authentic about his compliments was a skill he somehow learned over time (I wanted to be like him and learn the tricks he used). He looked at me all confused and didn’t know what I was talking about. Doug was simply a positive uplifting person at his core! Our 1:1s used to be more about personal updates than about work related stuff. He used to be so proud of his app that controlled tv/game time for Ben/Langdon based on the amount of chores they did (he always had a “I’m a genius” smirk on his face when he used to talk about the app

Doug and I met 7 years ago when I joined his feature team as a newbie PM. We had many chats during the year and he gave me lots of advice. He is always positive and stays calm. Talking with him eased the anxiety under pressure and let me concentrate on work. Since then, Doug is not only a colleague and a great team leader, but also a friend and a brother to me. I miss you buddy.

It's not everyday that we come across someone who is so genuinely empathetic, positive and warm hearted like Doug. I have had the privilege to work with Doug for 5 years and he has had a deeply positive impact on me at both professional and personal level. Doug always cared about people and believed in treating people with respect and making sure they had a positive and supportive working environment. I felt empowered to do the right thing and I could always count on Doug for the support and encouragement needed. I looked forward for 1:1s with him as they were really relaxing, insightful and I always came out feeling better. At times he shared stories about building his new home and the challenges that came with it which really made interesting and fun conversations. Doug was one of the best presenters I have known and he had the special ability to articulate things in a positive and inspiring way. Thank you Doug for building such a wonderful team, motivating us to be our best and teaching us how to be empathetic and nice to each other! I will really be missing the positive energy and guidance from you!
