At times, when I'd see Donna, those Ritchie Valens song lyrics from the '50's "Oh Donna" 🎵 would spontaneously start playing its mental melody. Like the song, Donna was admired and loved dearly by her family and circle of friends. She touched all with her exuberance and kindness, a strong New York accent, and giggles that resound when I hit 'replay' from my memory bank. Donna's little rolling red library would show up often to share what she'd read or we'd get an email with: 'here's my recommendations...' She was also involved in book clubs. Donna loved sharing meals with "the girlfriends" aka 'the gf's'. She was typically "infamously" late even to her own birthday parties! We had lunches at Cafe Flora, holiday teas at Queen Mary or the Sorrento, and walked together at Bellevue Botanical Gardens. Donna and I compared 'notes' about our mutual teacup collections. We enjoyed decades of friendship as part of "the gf's" and now, with great sadness, must wave goodbye to one more of our own. Not in a forever loss, but an "I'll see ya later on down the road" kind of message. Oh Donna 🎵, thanks for all the moments of our long friendship! I lift a cup of Earl Grey in your honor!

Anyone who knew Donna very well, knew how much she loved sharing books. One of the books I kept from her vast collection is World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil. It caught my eye as we were preparing her belongings to be passed on to others. What a charming collection of stories about this poet’s life and some of the natural wonders she’s encountered. I wonder if Donna had read it and how it came to her attention. I would love to tell her how much I’m enjoying it. Thank you, Donna, for this gift.

"A friend in need is a friend indeed." This quote exemplifies Donna as a true friend. Whenever I was going through a difficult time in my life, I would call Donna. She listened sympathetically, offered words of comfort, and sometimes gifted me with my favorite cookies. Over the years, she also gifted me with many wonderful books, thereby expanding my reading repertoire. Donna and I had fun together exploring Kelsey Creek Park and Bellevue Botanical Gardens, as well as lunches at Factoria restaurants, celebrating major Jewish holidays, and sharing childhood memories (we grew up near each other in New York City). Her friendship enriched my life. May her memory be a blessing!

I only knew Donna for a short 6 months before she passed. But in that time, we bonded over our passion for books, jigsaw puzzles and Jewish chicken soup! During the most difficult part of her life, she showed strength and determination in her efforts to beat cancer. Donna shared parts of her life with me during her treatments, and growing up on the east coast. She was humble and kind with a bit of spice! I think of her often and was so honored to be a small part of her life!❤️

My earliest memory of Donna comes from when I was 4 years old and she was 9. In those days Donna and I shared a bedroom and we’d often stay up after light outs talking away. It was the summer before I was to enter Kindergarten and Donna thought I should learn to read. I already knew some words from Superman comics and The Mickey Mantle Story, but I was entering the Big Time – PS 212, and Donna knew I should up my game so as not to bring disgrace upon the family name, which she had so very capably elevated. In retrospect, I think we were playing quite a fun game – she the all-knowing masterful teacher and me the eager star student. In any case, she prepared me well and I was able to handle Dick and Jane with confidence and enthusiasm, which seemed to inordinately delight my teacher. Looking back at it, I realize now that the biggest thing Donna taught me that summer was that reading is important, a lesson she continued to teach me her whole life.

Donna was a great friend for many years. I will always remember her with fondness and respect and will always miss her.
