To Family and Friends Donald died Sunday evening, May 31, in our home surrounded by family. Although he had been losing both appetite and weight in recent months, we didn't know (partly due to the virus hitting NYC, partly due to his stubborn resistance to seeing a doctor) until May 20 th that he had pancreatic cancer. He decided he would be most comfortable with hospice care. We thought we would have more time with him, but at least his three children, Joshua, Jason and Marni, and I had ample opportunity to say what we needed to say. Our granddaughter Lucia visited several times, smiling frequently and singing songs with us around the upright piano in the same room with Donald. Natasha Facetimed from France and laughed at Donald's funny faces when he still had the energy. He was 86 and would have celebrated his 87 th year the day after I reach 80 in November. Astonishingly, we spent close to 60 years together since the fall when we met in 1960 to search for a rental piano for my little apartment. Music brought us together and gave us pleasure throughout the years. Years ago, he pushed me to study and perform some of the most challenging works for piano. He also loved poetry and literature, as evidenced by a very large collection of books, a printed volume of his poetry, a play produced off-off Broadway, and a large miscellany of poems, plays, novels, critical and humorous articles stored on our computer. In the same way, he always urged our children to follow their dreams. Despite the tandem arrival of Covid-19 to the US and his as yet undiagnosed cancer, he spent happy hours with his young granddaughters, unleashing a streak of silly humor. And from his large collection of DVD's, he introduced them to The Magic Flute and Hansel and Gretel which became favorites on school holidays. Our lives were enriched by our extended families, our wonderful friends who often kept in touch better than we did (my profound thanks!), our neighbors, my amazing plant-obsessed colleagues who met Donald, and our series of feline pet/friends. Life is richer with people, animals and plants to care about. Conversely, our children cared immensely about Donald and stepped in at the end of his life to take many responsibilities off my hands. I love them and am grateful beyond words. We hope to see you, in the late fall.Until then, stay well.

Our children have grown up moving between our yard and Lola and Donald's beautiful garden. In addition to the other attractions-Lola's spectacular plantings, the homemade scarecrow and the rope swing-Donald's stories were what sent them over (possibly at more than an appropriate neighborly frequency). Donald could tell a wild story off the top of his head, with the kind of idiosyncratic details-I'm thinking of a story about a strange woman in search of two green lemons-that immediately entrance kids. Most of us lose this kind of creativity by the time we're adults, but not Donald. Paul and I and our children, Cleo and Nick, will always remember him.

Donald (my dad), would often come to tuck my brother and I into bed at night when we were young. Many times he would pretend to be funny characters that he would make up, mainly his personal version of Captain Hook and the captain's odd companion named Harry Galute. These two fellows would often spontaneously argue with each other over silly points until one would turn into a tickle monster and get me. This all was great fun and one of the best times in my life. May the spirit of such joy follow my Dad on his soul's journey.

It's been almost six months since Donald's passing and I miss hearing his compassionate voice along with seeing the sparkle in his eyes whenever we were joking around or due to the presence of the family's ladies who had a special place in his heart. In the nearly 15 years I have known him we shared quite a few lovely moments. One such moment that will stay with me, was a dinner in Park Slope when Gerald & Lucy were in town. Marni and I (Natasha was not yet born) stayed late and the six of us had a wonderful time, exchanging jokes and listening to Donald & Gerald recount their childhood memories. I am grateful for the time Natasha had with her grandfather. I know both his granddaughters brought Donald a lot of joy in his later years. An affectionate thought to all of you (felines included) who miss him too.

From Daniel Lloyd: I greatly enjoyed the time spent in Brooklyn when I was younger. I feel that Donald was a major part of that. Sophia and I were encouraged to read Bloom County comics, with all their humorous observations and surprisingly pithy comments. We also somehow got involved in the political workings of a place called Cheeriotown, of which Donald presided as mayor. So (Sophia) and I had different ideas as to what our jobs would be in this wondrous town, but I don't recall if any of those jobs had longevity. We probably wanted a different job soon after, since children are so capricious! Things were good, and the brownstone and its unique atmosphere was compelling. It was different enough from the Vermont house I knew; tall, somewhat narrow, and containing items that were the mark of distinct personalities. On that note, I remember seeing Donald's classical music collection once, and I was impressed. At that age I didn't really understand how much precision and genius went into writing enduring works in classical music. I just knew they sounded really cool, and the fact that Donald had amassed this collection made him extremely cool! Love all of you, Danny

I was so, so saddened to hear of Donald's passing. I know what a loss this is for his wife, Lola, his three children, Joshua, Jason and Marni, and for the entire family. Yet at the same time, I also know how much Donald filled their lives, over many years, with his love and devotion, his love of music and literature, his sense of humor, his creativity, wisdom, incredible intellect, and his capacity to accept people as they are. In short, Donald was an extraordinary person who will never leave the lives of those whom he has touched, myself included
