A gentle giant who made the world laugh, and loved with all his heart.

Donald Richard Gibb was born on August 4, 1954, in New York City and raised in California. Standing 6'4" with a muscular build, a deep gravelly voice, and a commanding screen presence, Donald was a force of nature who became one of the most recognizable character actors of his generation — and one of the most genuinely beloved off it. He came to Hollywood not through drama school but through athletics. After attending Notre Dame High School, he earned a basketball scholarship to the University of New Mexico, where he pledged Phi Delta Theta, before transferring to the University of San Diego to play both football and basketball. His dreams of professional sports nearly came true — he briefly held a roster spot with the San Diego Chargers — until a serious automobile accident ended his football career and pointed him toward the screen. Donald's early roles were small but memorable: uncredited appearances in Any Which Way You Can (1980), Stripes (1981), and Conan the Barbarian (1982). Then came 1984 and the role that would define a generation. Cast as Frederick Aloysius "Ogre" Palowaski in Revenge of the Nerds, his thunderous screen presence turned what could have been a throwaway villain into an enduring cultural icon. He reprised the role in two sequels and gave the character a warmth that fans never forgot. His range extended well beyond comedy. His portrayal of Ray Jackson in the martial arts classic Bloodsport (1988) alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme introduced him to a global action audience. For nearly a decade he anchored HBO's 1st & Ten as Leslie "Dr. Death" Krunchner across 69 episodes. Over a career spanning more than 90 screen roles, he appeared alongside Tommy Lee Jones in U.S. Marshals and Will Smith in Hancock, and guest-starred on The A-Team, Magnum P.I., Seinfeld, Cheers, MacGyver, Quantum Leap, and The X-Files. Away from the cameras, Donald was the opposite of every brute he played. He co-owned Trader Todd's karaoke bar in Chicago's Wrigleyville neighborhood, where he promoted "Ogre" beer and made time for every fan who walked through the door. A devout Christian, he anchored his life in faith and family — his wife Jacqueline Bauer, their five children Moana, Lehua, Travis, Mykkal, and Olivia, and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who followed. Donald Richard Gibb passed away on May 12, 2026, at his home in Texas at age 71, surrounded by his family after a prolonged illness. His thunderous laugh, his generous spirit, and his extraordinary gift for making people feel something on screen will never be forgotten.

Don was my next door neighbor in North Hollywood. I was a young kid in middle school and high school. Don 6 years older. He was so kind to me and my family. He played basketball with me and I really looked up to Don. He was a gentle giant. I lost touch with Don - but never forgot his kindness and confidence. He will be missed on earth by all the folks he touched.
