Dona Theresa MacKie (Dover)
July 4th, 1951 - October 4th, 2022
July 4th, 1951 - October 4th, 2022
Dona passed away last October after a long illness, at 71 years of age.
Wife of 50 years, to Bob; Mother to Heather, Craig and Robert; Mom in Law to Jesse Albers and Jessy Langston. Grandmother to Ella, Benjamin, Tilly (Mathilda); Sister to Theresa and Gary; Sister in Law to Ian MacKie and Paul d’Orsonnens; Aunt to Simon, Edward, Antonia, Dan, Marie and Richard; and very dear to many friends and colleagues.
If there was a word to describe Dona, it would be “passionate”.
She was passionate about her work, her interests, her projects, her home, her dogs, her travels, her friends and always about her family.
She cared deeply, was so curious about everything, and brought an insightful perspective on all that caught her interest.
Dona was a dedicated operating room nurse, educator and supervisor for over 50 years, who began her nursing career at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, and retired from Lady Minto Hospital, Salt Spring Island. She was much appreciated by peers and very much respected by her colleagues.
Her passing has left an emptiness in all of our lives, which cannot quite be filled.
She is out of her pain now and for that, we are thankful.
We love you Dona, and we miss you.

I met Dona and Bob when I lived with them for a high school year as a 15-year old girl back in 2013. Back then, Dona took me into her home, gave a me place to feel safe and loved away from my home and family back in Germany. Through the years Dona watched me grow, guided me, loved me. We kept in close contact throughout the 10 years that have passed since. Getting to know her and feeling how much she loved me and how much I love her in return are easily one of the greatest gifts I have been offered in this short life. Loosing her is one of the hardest things I have had to cope with. My heart goes out to her family, who I am sure feels the same. Next month I will be starting my master studies and there is nothing that I would want more than pick up the phone and tell her about it. I know that she would be so proud of me. I like to think, that from wherever she is, she is watching over me, her face beaming with pride. She has told me so many times to persue my dreams. So much of what I have accomplished since is thanks to her encouragement. I am forever grateful for the conversations and laughter we shared. I am keeping a fire for you, Dona. See ya.

The Day After . . . Yesterday was Dona’s memorial. It was difficult and wonderful. I have spoken publicly many times but I had a difficult time doing so yesterday. Thinking back; I believe I said risk averse when I meant pain averse. It still hurts to think and speak about Dona. But yesterday helped so much that this morning I am writing this, looking at pictures of Dona and starting to share with all of you that loved and cared for her. Thank you to everyone . . . but particularly thanks to our children who did such a wonderful job, spoke so eloquently and with such feeling. I tried to speak to Dona’s work but the pain was too intense, so I was so pleased that Andrea was able to give you a glimpse into Dona’s time at Lady Minto Hospital on Salt Spring as she ran the Operating room there. Finally thank you to everyone for remembering Dona and helping me get through the pain of loss. I will share more about Dona over the next few days.

Dona’s unique sense of style was one of the first things we noticed about her. We met Dona and Bob when it was clear we were to become in laws! We had great fun helping to plan Jesse and Heather’s wedding. It was lovely getting to know this fine human. You will be missed dear friend. Leslie and John Albers
