Donald (Don) Frederick Butland, 73, died suddenly on the morning of July 11, 2021 at home in Buckhorn, Ontario. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Elaine, who was at his side as he passed. Don was predeceased by his brother Brian and his parents Audrey and Peter. He is dearly missed by Elaine and their sons Ken (Angeline), David (Laura) and Jason (Adriana), his granddaughter Aviella, his sister Kathy (Ron) Hailstone, his sister-in-law and Brian’s wife Wendy, his sister-in-law Carol (Bob) Wells and brother-in-law Ross Liddycoat, his many nieces and nephews, the Villalobos family in Costa Rica and countless friends of the family in Canada and Costa Rica.

Don was born on February 19, 1948 in Hamilton, Ontario. In his early twenties he became a pilot, and flew all over Alberta, BC and the Northwest Territories, where he lived as a flight instructor. He was an avid motorcyclist, working as a salesman for Cycle World and appearing on the cover of the Honda Motorcycles Canada catalogue in 1970 (riding his own ’69 model). He met Elaine, a schoolteacher, in the apartment building they both lived in, often chatting together in the elevator. They married in 1976, had two sons and moved often, first to Mississauga, Caledon and then Whitby. Don enjoyed hunting and especially fishing, and was very fond of fly-in fishing trips in Northern Ontario with his two boys.

In 1995, Don founded Eldon Lighting, the family business in Oshawa, Ontario that he ran with Elaine, David and their loyal staff right up until the end.

Don and Elaine befriended the Villalobos in the early 2000s, a struggling Costa Rican family with seven children who they met on their first vacation there. Members of the Villalobos family became very close, affectionately referring to Don as “Don Don.” After many years of love and support, they applied to legally adopt Jason Villalobos as their son.

Don couldn’t stand being inactive. If he wasn’t at the store, you’d find him landscaping up at 'Shangri-Lodge,' the family lake home in Buckhorn, or else on the grounds of their mountain home near Atenas, Costa Rica, keeping the iguanas out of the drainage pipes and tending to the fruit trees in the orchard. He loved a glass or two of Woodbridge wine in the evening and was always ready with a joke he found on the internet. He will be forever missed.

Memorial services will be privately held. Charitable donations may be made in Don’s name to Operation Smile Canada (www.operationsmile.ca).

The Butland family strongly encourages people to share their favourite memories of Don here, where they will bring much comfort and joy, and help keep his memory alive. Using the Tribute feature below, please add a message, share a memory, and especially add a photo of Don if you have one.

I can still picture Don coming through the cedars and climbing up some rocks, to say "Hi" and have that neighbourly chat. Hearing him work outside for hours, pressure washing rocks and keeping the property well landscaped. Remembering stories shared of family, work, travel and builds. Your generosity and humour. Don We are thankful for all of it and are so sorry that you can not be our full time neighbour. Our thoughts and prayers are with Elaine and your family. Marg and Jim

Linda And Al Given

Linda and Al Given Elaine and Family , our hearts and thoughts are with you in these sad and difficult times . We have had the pleasure of knowing Don and Elaine for 20 years as Buckhorn neighbours …..we saw Don and Elaine survive a "raccoon ravaged" camper trailer , building of a bunkie home , then a real home , then re roof the home ,then excavating for the new garage ….thru all this ,Don with his unforgettable smile , took on each project as a new challenge and adventure , analyzing , planning and budgeting each step . Between projects he relentlessly performed property maintenance, ( we thought of him as "the ever-ready bunny" ) . He was always the first to offer to pay for any road work , left beer and wine for us in his outdoor fridge as thanks for our off season property inspection , oh and yes always had an adventure to tell us about , or at least one of his "jokes" . Don , your presence will be dearly missed , we are so so sorry .

I have known the Butland family through their sons for over 25 years. Unfortunately, I didn't get to know their father that well, so I don't have any memories to share. However, I consider Ken to be family and he is like a second older brother to me. I have always admired the ease he has of moving through the world that only comes from the absolute assurance and confidence in your parents love for you. And I think that says so much about the kind of person Mr. Butland must have been. Sending so much love to you all.

Whenever Don left or entered the front gate at Hacienda Atenas he always had something funny or clever to say to the guard. Often times we would be in short sleeve shirts and joke with Saul who was wearing his coat that it was NOT cold. If you want to know what cold is visit Thunder Bay in January. Don did love to eat and he would always clean his plate at a restaurant then joke with the waiter he didn't like it.. We shared many beers sitting on the patio enjoying the view. When I would pick up Don and Elaine at the airport right on top of the mountain of luggage was the box of just purchased rum. I think Don single handedly keep the liquor store in business. They were on a first name basis with him.. He is already dearly missed and always will be. I am proud and happy to call Don my friend. Ken

Dad and the family with Gramma in the Doral, mid 1980s. We did a trip through the Trent–Severn Waterway, and might have even passed by the site of our future home near Buckhorn.
