Dixie Cooper

On Monday, November 23, 2020, Dixie K. Cooper, loving wife and “Nonnie”, passed away at the age of 83 after a courageous battle with recurrent breast cancer. Dixie was born on July 3rd, 1937 in Globe-Miami, AZ to John and Mary Vesta (Ballard) North. She grew up in Six Shooter Canyon playing in the country and caring for her brothers. Dixie's favorite childhood memories were the few years she spent in Hawaii while her father was stationed there in the Navy. In 1951 she was married to Paul Corso, and they had three children, Gina, Michael and Michelle.
After an annulment, Dixie moved to Phoenix with her children and began working in the restaurant business in the 1960's. While working at the Peter Pan Drive In, she met Bob Sikora. She then went on to work with him at Mr. Lucky’s Nightclub. She became a confidant and shared visionary with Bob, whom she helped develop and grow the Bobby McGee’s Conglomeration from its inception into the early 80's. She was a leader that created a work culture that encouraged reaching one’s highest potential and was pivotal in the expansion of the company across the United States. While working at BMC she met and married her lifelong devoted partner, Wayne Cooper, on July 15th, 1976 in Hawaii. Hawaii always remained a special place of happy memories for Dixie, and Wayne plans to return to where they were married and scatter Dixie's ashes there this summer.
Dixie was a seeker of spiritual truth and wisdom. She was a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba after the inner peace she felt on her first trip to India in 1979. For decades she was committed to doing service, taught values and unity of religions to children, was a leader in the Sai organization, and flourished sharing a spiritual path with and counseling others. She enjoyed the peace of being quiet, reading, and writing. She wrote a book of her life and spiritual journey called “From Darkness to Light”. She also enjoyed going to the movies with Wayne, having meaningful, laughter-filled visits with friends, and spending time with family.
In 1983 Dixie and Wayne obtained custody of their grand daughter Christie (Gina) and raised her as their own. Dixie had stopped working and appreciated her second chance as an older, wiser mother. She relished in the relationships she had with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved encouraging their educations and paying up for straight A’s, imparting her wisdom and support when needed in their lives, watching them perform and play sports, and just being with them, making them laugh and love each other. In the end this was the hardest part for her to let go, as she loved them all so much.
Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Vesta North, her half-brothers “Sonny” John L. Jones and C.M. “Butch” North, and her daughter, Gina Crouch. She is survived by her loving husband Wayne, her children, Michael Corso ( wife Debbie), Michelle Erickson, and Christie Frakes (husband Brian), her grandchildren Michael Jr. and Ashley (Michael), Stephanie and Cindy (Michelle), and her great- grandchildren Lily, Cooper and Charlie Frakes (Christie and Brian), Tyler and Madison Moran (Cindy and Lonny), Levi Mayin (Ashley) and Parker Corso (Michael Jr. and Ashley). There will be an intimate Celebration of Life for family and very close friends on Saturday, May 8th at Aunt Chiladas, where Dixie wanted a party for her loved ones to enjoy a drink, green corn tamale, and each other’s company.
If you would like to share a memory, story or photo please share on this site for all who loved her to enjoy. Please consider doing service or donating to your favorite charity, as they all need help right now. Hospice of the Valley was also very kind and helpful in her final days.
