It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that the family of Derek Brian Schreiber announces his sudden and unexpected passing on August 26th, 2020. Derek had just celebrated his 29th anniversary working for the Christian Labour Association of Canada, in the position of Provincial Representative. He was a passionate man of God and was widely loved by those who knew him. He had a big personality and an even larger heart, as well as a fantastic sense of humour. He generously shared his talents and time through his musical and technical abilities, most frequently amongst his church community. Derek is survived by his loving wife of over 30 years, Jane; children, Katherine (Adam) Zacharuk and Benjamin Schreiber; parents Bertus and Alice Schreiber; siblings, Sylvia (Tymen) Van Stryland, Martha Schreiber (Shiao Chong), and John Schreiber; brother-in-law Albert den Otter (Krista); sister-in-law Alice den Otter (Steve); 3 nephews, 5 nieces, 2 great-nephews and 1 great-niece. He was predeceased by his parents-in-law, Jacob and Tieny den Otter, and his brother-in-law, James den Otter. Derek will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by countless extended family, friends, church community and colleagues alike, as well as the many members he served. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home (10011 114 Street NW, Edmonton AB), and a Memorial Service is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at West End Christian Reformed Church (10015 149 St, Edmonton AB) – Due to COVID-19 restrictions, space will be limited. If you wish to attend in person, requests can be made by contacting the church office at admin@westendcrc.ca. The Memorial Service will also be available via livestream through the church’s website (www.westendcrc.ca). Derek loved when I told him this ..this is what happened to me .. a manger was going to write me up for someone not cleaning the carts .. I told the manager I was off how can I be responsible for that when I was not there .. he said he didn’t care .. so I told him I’m calling Derek and he got so mad .. he said don’t threaten me with DEREK.. I said don’t write me up for something I didn’t do .. so he repeated saying don’t threaten me with DEREK.. he laugh so hard when I told him this at our jlm.. and made sure I told others what happened hehe .. I never got written up .. just saying Derek’s name made some manger get nervous .. I’m going to miss him

I knew Derek quite well for a while back in the late 1980s in Ottawa. He was always a fine fellow with a great sense of humour, who used his talents of leadership and music to lead the Young Adults group that we had at Calvin Church. I recall that he was shy about directly asking Jane for her phone number, and asked me if I might know what it was. I didn't, but I had a slightly sneeky way of getting it for him! The rest is history! Even though I haven't seen or talked with him for a very long lime, I feel a sense of losing an old friend.

I'm afraid that it's been some 20+ years since I last spoke with Derek. I was the drummer in his band, "Interregnum" and the engineer/drummer/backing vocalist/water boy in his album, "Journey to Shilo". The time we spent working on that album are some of the best times of my life and I really miss those days when music was a big part of my life. Derek, I tip my hat to you for sticking with your passion and for continuing to share it with others. It appears that Derek didn't change after all those years out west; still the funny and focused guy whom many others grew to love and respect. Whenever I think of Edmonton I think of Derek and Jane and wonder how they're doing. Kessie was the flower girl at my wedding and my wife and I had the privilege of meeting Ben shortly before the big move out west. Ben, from seeing the service on video you really have your Dad's eyes. I'm certain that you and Kessie will always make your dad proud. Derek's soul is blindingly bright and I'm thankful that he shared some of that light with me. I'm sure that if he could speak to me now that he'd say something in his Monty Python voice (that he could do SOOO well) and we'd go through the whole Monty Python shtick (though Mike could do it better than me). Well Derek, you've always been missed over here in Waterloo Ontario and I hope I have the privilege of seeing you again when my time comes. Thank you for being a such a wonderful part of my life. God bless you Jane, Kessie and Ben. My his light continue to shine through all of you.

Derek and I both started with CLAC around the same time, and I readily came to appreciate both his sense of humour and his skill in labour relations. Together, we worked to represent a growing retail foods membership, and those were years that I look back on fondly. Derek will be missed.
