Tough times never last.

Dennis Wayne Franchione — known throughout college football simply as "Coach Fran" — was a builder of programs, a developer of men, and one of the most tenacious figures the sport has ever produced. Born on March 28, 1951, in Girard, Kansas, he grew up with a love for the game that never wavered across six decades of coaching. After earning his Bachelor of Science in physical education from Pittsburg State University in 1973, Franchione spent his early years honing his craft in the high school ranks before breaking into collegiate coaching at Kansas State as a wide receivers coach in 1978. His ascent was steady and purposeful. At Pittsburg State from 1985 to 1989, he built something remarkable: a 53-6 record, five consecutive conference championships, and two NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Those Gorilla teams were a reflection of who he was — disciplined, prepared, relentless. What followed was a career defined by turnarounds. At the University of New Mexico, he recruited a lanky linebacker from Lovington named Brian Urlacher and led the Lobos to their first bowl game in 36 years. Then came TCU, where his greatest chapter unfolded. He inherited a program that had gone 1-10 the year before his arrival and, alongside a young running back named LaDainian Tomlinson, guided the Horned Frogs to a 25-10 record over three seasons, capping it with a 10-2 finish in 2000 — the program's first top-25 ranking since 1959. He later said those years were the greatest of his coaching life. His tenures at Alabama and Texas A&M tested him in ways wins and losses alone could not measure, and he met those challenges with characteristic stubbornness. After stepping away from Texas A&M in 2007, he contributed his voice to ESPN Radio before returning to the sideline at Texas State from 2011 to 2015, overseeing the Bobcats' demanding transition from FCS to FBS competition. In 2024, Franchione published his memoir, "Tough Times Never Last: The Coach Fran Story," directing its proceeds toward charity and Texas Oncology, the organization that helped him fight cancer for nearly a decade. His 2026 nomination to the College Football Hall of Fame ballot was a fitting recognition of a career record of 213-135-2 across 30 seasons at seven programs. Dennis Franchione passed away on October 6, 2026, in Austin, Texas, surrounded by family. He left behind his wife Kim, daughters Ashley Renee and Libby, son Brad, and a coaching tree whose branches span the sport he dedicated his life to.

Our fortunes as a department would not be what they are today without the efforts of Coach Franchione, his staff, and players. Beyond his talent as a football coach, he was a beloved father, mentor, and friend to so many.
