Doctor Dennis Alan Cohen, Age 72, of Angel Fire passed away peacefully on October 6, 2022 after a lengthy battle with dementia which was caused by exposure to mold. He was born on August 9, 1950 in Denver, Colorado.  He graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1976 and completed his medical residency in Family Practice Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, NM in 1979.  After completing his residency, he worked at the Family Health Clinics in Albuquerque and Los Lunas for over 11 years.  Dennis loved the outdoors, backpacking, fishing, camping, hiking, and skiing. This love is what brought him to Angel Fire in 1991, where he was the doctor in town until he retired in 2017.  He was a “people person”, he loved being a doctor and he loved his patients.  He also loved Angel Fire and Taos and being so closely surrounded by nature, all the beauty and animals.  In Angel Fire, friends taught him to be a “lumberjack” of sorts.  Every year he looked forward to Spring and Summer when he could cut down trees, buck them up and split firewood.  He really did like doing this… another way to spend time outdoors.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Alta Cohen, brothers, Michael and Larry and many other relatives and friends.  He is survived by his wife and life partner of 51 years, Marilyn Cohen, sister, Ellen Zelniker of San Diego, CA and many nieces and nephews.  He will be dearly missed.  We will LOVE you forever, Dennis.

There will be a celebration of his life at a later date.

I am sad. I have just read Dr. Cohen’s obituary. I am 22 years older than he. Alzheimers takes our loved ones before we are ready. Fortunately for Isabella and I, he came to the Angel Fire to serve as our family doctor shortly after we arrived. We came to respect and love him as a friend for bringing us through our aliments until Isabella’s condition forced us to leave in 2006. Many are the memories to recall of Dr. Cohen: Of the comedy of passing out sitting on his examining table; He caught me falling into his arms as he checked my carotid; Of his startled reaction during another annual exam when he discovered a growth on the right side of my thyroid; Of Nurse Patti’s often repeated story as she laughingly related how she had to grab the flashlight when the lights went out during Isabella’s exam; Of other years in sequence as I sat watching Dr. Cohen administer the famous Alzheiners exam to Isabella; Of how grateful I was to see Dr Cohen socially when we had returned to Angel Fire to attend service in commemoration pf our mutual dear friend, Betty Ann Moon; Little could I realize that would not reoccur in this lifetime. Au revoir, our friend

I worked for Dr Cohen for 19 yrs at MVHCC. There were so many funny stories to share through those yrs. He was calling almost weekly up until about 3 months ago. I think my number was the only one by his phone. He will truly be missed.
