Dee Palmer

Jethro Tull during the Aqualung era — the band whose orchestral sound Dee Palmer helped define with her landmark string and brass arrangements.

Dee Palmer was a singular force in British music — a composer, arranger, conductor, and keyboardist whose orchestral imagination gave progressive rock some of its most enduring sonic textures. Born on 2 July 1937 in Hendon, London, she came to music through an unlikely door: the British Army. Enlisting in the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards in the late 1950s, she taught herself clarinet from scratch as a member of the regimental band, eventually rising to Assistant Principal Clarinet and studying at Kneller Hall, the Royal Military School of Music. After leaving the Army in 1963, she pursued formal composition studies at the Royal Academy of Music, working under the celebrated composer Richard Rodney Bennett. She graduated in 1966 having won both the Eric Coates Prize and the Boosey and Hawkes Prize, and was later appointed a Fellow of the Academy in 1994.

Her professional life in music began quickly. Her first major project was arranging strings for folk legend Bert Jansch on the 1967 album "Nicola." A year later, Jethro Tull manager Terry Ellis recruited her to arrange horn and string parts for the band's debut album "This Was," launching a creative partnership that would define the next decade. As arranger and conductor, Palmer shaped the orchestral sound of landmark Tull albums including "Aqualung," "Thick as a Brick," "A Passion Play," "War Child," and "Minstrel in the Gallery." From 1976 to 1980 she joined the band full-time as keyboard player, bringing warmth and architectural depth to their live performances. Ian Anderson would remember her as a pipe-smoking "creative co-conspirator" with whom he shared many a hot curry and hours of conversation.

After leaving Tull in 1980, she built a prolific second career producing orchestral arrangement albums drawing on the catalogues of Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, the Beatles, and Queen. In 1998, she came out publicly as transgender and intersex, changing her name from David to Dee; her gender reassignment surgery followed in 2004. In her later years she released her sole solo album, "Through Darkened Glass" (2018), featuring original compositions reflecting on life, loss, and personal experience, and continued touring with the Martin Barre Band. Revered for her kindness, sharp wit, and pioneering spirit, Dee Palmer passed away peacefully at her home in Shropshire on 13 June 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by family.
