A virtual memorial will be held February 21, 2021 at 1pm MST via a video zoom link which will be posted HERE. The link is also posted elsewhere on this site. David Orr Thayer, M.D. of Boulder, CO passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at his home following a courageous three and a half year battle with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), an aggressive form of brain cancer. Although his family and friends mourn David's death, they celebrate the love, life, and passion he applied to every day of his life. Born in Erie, PA to William Thayer and Ethel (Spence) Thayer on February 11, 1949, David graduated Suma Cum Laude from Strong Vincent High School in 1967. After attending Grove City College for a B.S. in Chemistry, David attended Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, in Philadelphia, graduating in 1975 with an M.D. and specializing in OB/GYN. Following a residency in St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, CT, he joined a practice in Cortland, New York. David, Carolyn Marino (his first wife of 23 years) and their two children moved to Boulder in 1985 where he opened his own OB/GYN private practice. David's practice was originally called Boulder OB/GYN and ultimately called The Thayer Group for Women's Care. He cared for thousands of women and delivered countless children until 2000, when he focused exclusively on practicing gynecology until 2016, when he was forced to retire. Throughout his career David devoted himself to quality, evidence-based medicine to treat the whole, individual patient. He was a pioneer in working with midwives in Boulder County, and later with his work with the DaVinci robot. His heart was broken in having to close his practice of more than three decades and retire after getting his cancer diagnosis. He continued to provide consulting services until months before his death. David leaves behind many who loved his spirit, intellect, and special zest for life, including his devoted wife, Charmaine Haravey, children from his first marriage to Carolyn Marino, David Marino Thayer (Niwot, CO), partner Ashley Grace, and grandchildren Bennett Oliver Thayer (5/18/17) and Rosalie Giada Thayer (1/18/19); daughter Emily Rebecah Spence Thayer (Grand Junction, CO), partner Andrew Lukasiewicz, and grandson Jaxson Gennaro Orr Lukasiewicz (12/6/19); older brother William L. Thayer (Carole Murphy), and younger brother Allan R. Thayer (Shelley Owens) all of Erie, PA, and mother-in-law Charlotte A. Haravey, of Boulder. He leaves behind nieces Kim Clear, Lesley Nelson, Laura Orlando, Kristen Hyromak, nephews Brian Thayer and William Thayer, and all of their families, including many great nieces and nephews. David loved his family, friends and patients. He left an indelible impression of compassion with those whom he met. He loved adventure travel, skiing, biking, hiking, dining, and a good cocktail with friends. He battled his cancer with courage and good humor until the end. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood or the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. A live, virtual celebration of life is scheduled for February 21, 2021 (1pm Mountain Time).

Joe Compagni misses Dave as his calm and considerate hunting partner on several hunts in Wyoming. In 2014, after an antelope hunt, Kathy joined Joe and Dave in Casper, WY for a Manhattan, dinner, and good stories. We share the sorrow of his loss with Carolyn and family, and Charmaine. With fondest memories, Joe and Kathy Compagni

Hey, Dave, we have so many memories, so where to start...the beginning of course was in Jersey when Carolyn and you began dating...then your wedding and move Connecticut (or NY?). We tried to do so many things the first time we visited, but you were on call and were kept busy. Then you bought the place in Ocean City and one of our favorite memories is all of us on that big sectional watching movies and eating ice cream. And who could forget the infamous day 2 or 3 year old Emily took off with her cousin for a stroll down the boardwalk, unbeknownst to any of the adults in the house!! We so appreciated the times we invaded your home on our trips to Boulder. The first time we came Carolyn and you schlepped us up to Breck on day 3 of the visit and Michelle was so overwhelmed by altitude sickness. None of us knew what it was at that point. Can't leave out the Pagosa trip and the Lightning Bike Tour. That's still up there as one of our favorite Colorado memories. We were lost for hours and if memory serves, that was pre cell phones. Probably the weirdest memory is when Carolyn and you went on a bike tour vacation and we stayed with the kids. You had us baby-sit not only Dave and Em, but also your 'pet' black widow spider!!! Will never forget opening her jar for the first time and smelling months worth of decaying insect carcusses. Much later is was a pleasure meeting Charmaine. We're grateful to have had our final visit on the day of Em's baby shower. Rest in peace, Dave. Michelle and Terry

Dave was a wonderful doctor, and I appreciate all the great care I received from him over the years. And when I learned Dave and Charmaine were a thing, WOW, I was so happy for both of them.

A special memory I have of David often being meticulous, David took a good amount of his personal time & spent countless hours tacking & hemming my prom dress to make it perfect and precise. 💙🙏🏻

David was one of the kindest persons I have ever known and one of the most compassionate physicians I have known. We enjoyed many long conversations over the years I knew him, and I was deeply saddened by his cancer diagnosis. We enjoyed a beautiful dinner with David and Charmaine on their patio surrounded by the beauty they had created. He was a dear friend and colleague with whom I could always have an enjoyable and enlightening conversation. He was always ready to answer my questions, and he was thoroughly supportive of my controversial work. He was one of the few physicians in Boulder who understood these issues because of his own experiences. I treasured my friendship with David, and I miss him a lot. He was brave and graceful to the end in the face of his deadly diagnosis and suffering. I thank Charmaine for her wonderful grace, love and support for David through it all. She was lucky to have David in her life, and he was beyond fortunate to have her in his. I liked the world a lot better with David in it. Warren

I was a gynecology patient in David's practice, but saw the midwife instead, as I also knew David (Carolyn, too!) from Rallysport. We worked out together occasionally with mutual friend (and superhero) Kevin Shepard, and I thought I'd keep the gym and my GYN separate! When I became pregnant, though, I wanted David to deliver our youngest, Grace-- 20 years ago, on Emily's birthday! That was always special for both of us. He allowed my son to be present for the birth, despite the fact that it became a C-Section! So David has been "family" to us since that day. Being an exceptional, brilliant, caring person and doctor that he was, sharing with me the concept of "whole body", David strategized with me re my family cancer history. It did come, but thanks to his foresight, we caught it early and he saw me through it. And then Grace's bout with children's leukemia the next year, at 8 1/2...and then going on to have Grace, a healthy young adult, as his patient; and counseling me through women's hormones. I was overjoyed to meet beautiful Charmaine, and see David be happy and in love again, enjoying his life. In an occupation so appropriate for this exceptional person, David had the gift of bringing life into our world, of starting so many families and then seeing them through life. Such a unique opportunity. And for those of us blessed with David in our lives, we truly had a great gift. The world was a far better place with him in it. His illness broke my heart, though watching him as a warrior throughout was an inspiration. I am so grateful to have remained in contact with him until nearly the end. I miss him, and look forward to seeing him again. My husband and I think of him every time we take a bite of avocado ("Eat more avocados...."). And we think of Emily, every year on August 20th, wishing both Grace and Emily a very happy birthday and year. Forever Grateful, with Love, Marcia Kohler and Family, Will, Grace & Graham
