David Herman

(January 14, 1946-June 3, 2020)

I have reached out to, and been contacted by, many who knew my brother over the years and across the globe. Many wonderful stories are emerging, not just of his professional accomplishments, but the way he touched people’s lives.  A memorial website has been set up at mykeeeper.com. If you go to the site and enter  David Herman in the search box you will be led to his particulars where you can enter your own comments. Pictures may be uploaded as well  My hope is that this site will allow all of us to share those tales, our collective sadness at his passing, and perhaps even to bring  warmth to our heavy hearts and a smile to our faces as these recollections come to life in our minds. While I have a certain number of names, to whom I have sent this message, there may be others who should be added. Please feel free to inform them as well.

May his memory be for a blessing.

For those of you wishing to make a donation in David’s memory, the family asks that you consider the Foundation for Circulatory Health, St. Mary’s Coronary Flow Trust. This would be by wire transfer to the Bank of Scotland, Sort Code 1-01-03. A/c no 00690525, BIC: BOFSGB21254, IBAN: GB87 BOFS 1201 0300 6905 25

David was a remarkable man. He was extraordinarily helpful to us at Monitor as we re-opened our business in Russia in the early 2000s, both through his networks and his business acuity, and both of these say a lot about him. When he introduced us to his friends and business contacts, they always took it as given that when David asked them to take a meeting it would be worthwhile; and David's keen personal interest in the substance and quality of our work invariably made it better. Over time, we came to do more and more together, and it was always a joy. David had a deep personal affinity for Russia. As the business climate there became more difficult, he continued to believe deeply in the ability of individuals to make a difference, and was an active supporter, coach and mentor for several entrepreneurs across different sectors who he felt were trying to do the right thing. And through others, his contribution and legacy lives on.

David, we have travelled around the world and enjoyed many delightful and unforgettable moments. One of those glorious highlights for both of us was at the home of Dhirubhai Ambani in Mumbai some 22 years ago. Rest in Peace.

I first met David about 20 years ago. He was recommended as someone I could talk to about creating a business for Monitor in Russia. We gelled and remained friends that that moment on. He invited me to join him on the board of Sollers. We discussed the many twists and turns of his other interests and life events. Paola and I had the pleasure of attending several operas together, and enjoyed staying in his flat in Madrid. David tolerated my inadequate bridge with his customary patience and good humour. He was a brilliant bridge player. He explained the secret being 'to visualise all the hands in three dimensions', I never really understood that, but will always treasure the evenings he was my bridge partner. When he couldn't come to the club anymore he had the patience to field my questions. I was lucky that David lived mainly in London and I was able to help him get his residence status, so we would meet regularly for lunch or breakfast at Ottolenghi in Notting Hill and then closer to Montagu Square. We would cover wine, American politics, the justice system, Russia, opera, bridge, GM, amongst many other. I will remember David as one of the most amiable, brilliant, genuine, generous polymaths I've had the privilege to know. Thank you for everything we did together.

It’s difficult for me to describe David in just a few sentences what stands out in my memory of these past 10 years I worked with David is his zest for adventure, travels all over the globe, and his intense enjoyment of the finer things in life. Sure, he loved to go to Bridge every day and enjoyed his bridge tournaments away and the winning of course But he didn’t bind himself only to his routine in London, Quite the opposite. David loved to travel, weather it be for business or for pleasure. Our visits to Miami to escape the dreary London Winter’s, arranging trips to see his brother and family all over the United States and Europe , the cruises and the paradise destinations in the last few year and the trips to Berlin or Russia to meet old friends and especially to see specific eight hour long opera he so enjoyed. There was no stopping him from being the globetrotter that he always was. We all know how David enjoyed only the “BEST” (as he used to say ) the best restaurants, the best meals, the best clothes and the best products available he always would make a point of sharing that experience. He would go out of his way to make sure that when guests came to London he would book the best restaurants and the newest theatre shows. That was what made him happiest, seeing his family and friends enjoying themselves. David wasn’t so much a sentimental man, but I guess that was his way of showing his love and appreciation. David loved life and enjoyed his to the fullest, without apology. He knew who he was and what he liked and there is something special in such clarity. I guess without him this world seems just a little less colorful.

David proved to be extremely influential on my career on two occasions. Firstly when working for the Parts operation at vauxhall in the UK 1990-92 when he was heading that up for Europe he challenged me to achieve higher targets and stretch the business - which we did. Then he asked me to join him in Russia in 1998 when GM were beginning to develop that market. I was fortunate to witness David at work developing strategy, convincing the GM Board what should be done, and out smarting many people [in of course a very polite way] during discussions and negotiations. He was one of my famous five 'Motor men' i have the pleasure of knowing. i enjoyed our chats and our discussions and on being beside him in some serious negotiations with some very 'aggressive' third parties. Working with David in Russia were some of the best years of my career. A lovely man who i had the deepest respect for and who always was interested in our family and how they were al doing. A true friend, colleague, boss and mentor. David, you will be sadly missed by many people. RIP
