Loved Ones

David Rex Cottle lived nothing short of a rock and roll life. David was born to Rex and Betty Cottle on April 21st, 1963, in California. He moved to Chino Valley when he was seven. Growing up with his older sisters, nephews, and nieces, he always got into mischief. Perhaps the only time he wasn’t getting into trouble was in the Boy Scouts because his dad was his Den Mother. Loving music from a young age, he would play “Singing” with his nieces and nephews, air-strumming tennis rackets while singing together. As he grew older, he was gifted his first guitar by his father and played music with friends.

1981 was a big year for David. A few months after graduating from Prescott High School, David went to pick up a new Eagles album from Cornet. There, he met a brown-eyed girl, Elizabeth; and it was love at first sight. When they first started dating, he worked at the Plaza Bowl and was a remarkable bowler. Over the next seven years, they began to build their life together. They got married at Prescott United Methodist Church in 1988.

As a young couple, David and Elizabeth moved to Phoenix, Arizona. David picked up a camera, and the rest was history.  He was a freelance photographer nearly his whole life. Working at photo labs by day, he melded his passions for music and photography by night. He and Elizabeth started their own local music scene magazine Razor’s Edge. Together, they photographed, met, and interviewed many of the greats… and a bunch of 80s hairbands. Around this time, he and Elizabeth took to the road for road trip adventures, visiting many of the western National Parks. They loved mountain biking and whitewater rafting.

David achieved the proudest title of his life, Dad, in May 1998 when he and Elizabeth welcomed their first daughter, Sierra, into the world. They moved back to Prescott shortly after her birth. During a February blizzard in 2003, his second daughter, Shayla, was born.

David Cottle was a father figure for many, but Sierra and Shayla were lucky enough to call him Dad. He wanted the absolute best for his daughters and was involved with many aspects of their lives, from volunteering with their Girl Scout troops to photograph their performances and volleyball games to youth ministry. He took each daughter on at least one solo trip, including Catalina Island with Shayla, and took Sierra to audition for a traveling Broadway musical in Denver. The family went on countless road trips and vacations together, and he passed on his love of photography to Sierra.

In addition to being an incredible dad, he was also an accomplished business owner and respected community member. He earned the ServiceMaster Franchise of the Year Award for his pioneering work in green cleaning and franchise ownership excellence. He lobbied Congress to advocate for small businesses, ran a small business networking group, and served on nonprofit and neighborhood boards.

Six years ago, he founded Music United Against Teen Bullying and Suicide. He brought together over 100 bands in Prescott, Phoenix, and Los Angeles to raise awareness around mental health, suicide prevention, anti-bullying, and the healing power of music. Through this and his other community involvement, he helped many people, primarily teenagers and young adults, believe in themselves and navigate life’s most challenging moments.

David Cottle passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 11th, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Rex Cottle. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Elizabeth Cottle; his daughter Shayla; his daughter Sierra; and soon-to-be daughter-in-law Belle Morse; sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, and mother-in-law.

As he was the Ultimate Dad, a memorial and potluck will take place in his memory on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16th, 2024, at Goldwater Lake at 10:30 AM. Rock on, David Cottle.

I knew Dave from an LA Guns concert where me and my friends would skip school together for this concert waiting like 12 hours for the best spot. We gave them gifts etc Tracii gave me a hug he caught this moment forever I am forever thankful I did this and I met him. Dave was a light something warm welcoming to sparky he was truly one of a kind I’m so happy to have known him. I visited him before he passed maybe a week or two before he was so happy to see me I wish I could’ve spent more time. Dave was a light in many peoples lives, he was a great dad he’d talk about his daughter so proudly, always cracking a joke, talking music, new stories, new music always to shown, and I truly will miss him. He told me “she should just go to the Billy idol concert with her mom don’t worry about me I already giving too much stress” (not the exact words) but he did really care and was proud to show me his daughters. He cracked a joke at the fact I love Bon Jovi he said “Bon Jovi you looks like your mom! At least I still got my full head of hair” referring to his wife’s mom “they got the same hair cut too!” He was something else I really loved talking with him and I really will miss him even if we weren’t super close I’ll always miss those text randomly about a photo he found of John 5 or Michael Monroe. I try to look at this happily although we miss him he’s healed happy probably with Razzle right now but Dave you were truly a great character in everyone’s life, he has left a little sparkle on everyone’s life, he was a joyful, kind but had spunk, funny, and is a person I’m happy I knew. -Iz

I only knew David for a short time. Through my husband, Chris, I learned about his organization. I was inspired and humbled. Chris took me to Phoenix to witness a handful of bands play. It was truly wonderful to see the wide eyed kids up on stage doing what they loved. All the while David in the audience cheering them on. We met (and still follow here in Tucson to this day) is Znora. I am certain that their beginning with Music United has provided them a superb launching pad. I wish I could have had more time to get to know David. My heartfelt sympathies for his family. Remember, he left an indelible mark on our world. Through his photography, philanthropic work and his smile. He will be missed.

David was a wonderful, kind and generous human being. He cared about music and supporting kids, and was selfless in how he helped young musicians. I have so many photos taken by David of my son's band when he was at School of Rock and Don't Tell Mom. I always looked forward to chatting with David at music events, we always had so much to talk about. My deepest sympathy to Beth, Sierra and Shayla, who he loved so much. His memory is indeed a blessing.

I have not seen David or his family in many years, but have great memories of his devotion to the creative life. He encouraged his (and other) children to participate in and enjoy the arts. When I was directing children's shows at the Prescott Fine Arts Association, he was always willing to step in and help in any way possible. Lucky for the theater, his help included wonderful photographs of the cast and scenes. My condolences to you, Beth, and to Sierra and Shayla. With fond memories. Judy (Davis) Clothier.
