Although it is sad news, I appreciate being notified by the organizers of the memorial service for Dr. David Adams. My daughter Margaret and I have fond memories of him during our Fulbright year about two dozen years ago. She had a Fulbright student year between her BA and graduate studies at Berkeley, and I enjoyed a Fulbright for senior scholars. Although we were based in two different universities in Beijing, we spent most of the year together. David was always a wise advisor and source of encouragement to our studies, research, and writing. When I shared with him the news that my daughter received a student Fulbright and would be in Beijing with me, he lit up with surprise and delight that two different Fulbright awards made such a family project possible. Although we connected at several annual meetings of the Association for Asian Studies, I lost contact with David slowly. I cherish fond memories of discussions with him. Margaret and I extend our condolences to the family and pray that many fond memories will help the void in their hearts caused by this loss. We also rejoice in his contributions to education and international exchanges and his life well lived. It is so fitting that he is being remembered at a memorial service in an Episcopal Church and will also be remembered at his B.A. institution at William and Mary.
