By far the most important thing about 120 Minutes was that it acted as a distribution channel for organic musical produce. The only other outlet for non-mainstream music at the time was a few local college radio stations.

Dave Kendall was a British-born journalist, editor, producer, and television host whose singular gift for authentic, music-first storytelling changed the way a generation discovered the sounds that would define their lives. Best known as the creator and longtime host of MTV's groundbreaking 120 Minutes, he championed punk, post-punk, goth, synth-pop, ska, and other underground sounds at a moment when mainstream radio and television had little room for them. Kendall came to music through the written word, cutting his teeth as a music journalist for Melody Maker, Spin, and the New York Post before finding his way to MTV in the mid-1980s. Joining the network as a producer in 1984, he pitched the concept for a late-night, two-hour block dedicated entirely to college radio and alternative music. That idea became 120 Minutes, which debuted on March 10, 1986 — a haven for bands that mainstream channels ignored. He stepped in front of the camera as the show's regular host from 1989 through 1992, a period that proved to be the most transformative in alternative music history. With a low-key, deeply informed style that put artists rather than himself in the spotlight, Kendall introduced American audiences to The Cure, Sonic Youth, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Pixies, Bauhaus, and Sisters of Mercy, among many others. On September 29, 1991 — wearing sunglasses to mask a bout of conjunctivitis — he introduced the world premiere of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," a moment that would prove to be a cultural inflection point. After leaving MTV in 1992, Kendall remained as restless and curious as ever. He co-hosted the syndicated music program Music Scoupe alongside a then-emerging Kelly Ripa, anchored the Woodstock '94 pay-per-view broadcast, hosted radio shows on Hot 97 and SiriusXM's First Wave, and worked as a producer, writer, and field director across TechTV/G4, Channel 4, Travel Channel, and Animal Planet. In later years he relocated to Asia, hosting and producing the travel program Destination Thailand for Bangkok Post TV and TrueVisions while championing environmental causes and continuing his work as a DJ. Dave Kendall died on July 14, 2026. He is remembered as one of the true believers — a journalist who loved music fiercely, respected the artists who made it, and gave a home to sounds that the world needed to hear.

Dave was one of the true believers. Long before alternative music found its way into the mainstream, he was there every week on 120 Minutes, introducing people to bands that would go on to define an era. He didn't just host a show. He gave a home to music that deserved to be heard. He loved the music, respected the artists, and connected with fans in a way that always felt authentic. That's a rare gift.

Dave was the coolest dude who helped all of us discover the music we're still listening to. He will be terribly missed. The Pixies, Slowdive, Lush, The Sundays, Mission UK, Siouxsie. A true legend.

In high school, as I was learning about the greater punk and punk adjacent scenes and genres known as 'alternative music,' Kendall was my guide and teacher. I learned so much from him and his show, things that I carry with me to this day. Rest well Dave and thank you.

For those of us that grew up then, Dave Kendall was the tastemaking older brother we never had, hipping us to a million 'alternative' bands before that was even the genres name.
