December 4th - September 30th, 2022
Forever in Our Hearts
Born December 4th, Darrin was chosen by Mac and Valerie Mackel to be their first child. He grew up in Villa Park and although he spent time in Alaska, he returned to Orange County and called it home. Darrin had various odd jobs right out of high school from waiter to postal clerk. When he accepted a job at Project Independence, it was his calling, and he stayed from 1998 until taking a medical leave in June 2022.
Darrin was an accomplished musician and was gifted with skills of the cello, piano, vocals, and organ. He loved music and was active in choral groups in his earlier years. He was very artistic with his drawings and “doodles” and you were lucky if he gifted one to you.
Darrin also had a wonderful sense of humor that he shared with all of us often along with that huge smile of his.
He had a passion for helping others, and his job choice reflected that commitment. He loved his co-workers, his clients, and the job!
He cherished his friends and family, and survivors include his brother, Brian Mackel, sister-in-law Carrie Mackel, two nephews- Tyler and Gavin Mackel, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous friends.

Darrin was always full of life with such a big smile on his face. He gave the greatest bear hugs you would ever want! He really was a big teddy bear! He was the one that introduced me to a big love in my life square dancing, that I did for years, and what wonderful memories I have with him. He gave me good friends that are in the past and still present now. I could never repay him for all he has done in my life to this very day. I will miss him so very much. I will see him in heaven!
