Darrick was born on Mother's Day, May 11, 1952.  I remember how excited 10 year old Dennis was to finally have a brother.  Dennis wanted to name him DEAN.  There was a TV show popular at the time called “The Name's The Same”.  Ordinary people would be on the show and players would have to guess their “famous” name.

Dennis thought his new brother “Dean Martin” would surely get to be on that show.

So “DEAN Francis Martin” it was.

As a toddler we called him “Deany Boy” and we all wanted to kiss him so much that he was reluctant to have us siblings pick him up.

Darrick was responsible for decorating my home in Los Angeles. New floors, paint, picture frames, brass doorknobs—detail was his forte. His space planning skills led to a complete remodel of 2 bathrooms & master bedroom, Darrick became a friend in the process. He enjoyed trying out Yiddish phrases on my husband, bringing us his holiday date cookies & bouquets of flowers. The guy was a real charmer. I miss him & the greeting cards he could be counted upon to send on special occasions. From Diane Kanner who Darrick called ‘DK’ Pictures here of potato latke lunch he and I enjoyed a few years ago

I feel so privileged to have known Darrick; he had so many good qualities. He was loyal, dependable, patient, funny, interested, good at listening and conversation, compassionate, authentic, responsible, and much more. Yet he was not so great at getting rid of stuff. I met your mother a couple of times, and a niece, Clarice's daughter, many years ago. I regularly recall some of your father's sayings that Darrick would call "Jewell-isms." An example is "That's good enough for these people (I'm usually referring to myself as "these people" when I think of it). From the way he talked about you all, Darrick clearly loved his family. I am sorry for the loss of your brother. Please know that he is missed by many.

I met Darrick around 2011 or 2012 when I was working in a shop along his dog Milo's walk route. We initially bonded over being midwesterners, and soon found we had a shared love of LA history and mid-century modern design. Darrick was a prolific storyteller and we never ran out of things to talk about. He was such a thoughtful, kind, and compassionate friend with a great sense of humor. No matter how long it had been since we'd last caught up, he always thought to inquire about something we had previously talked about and how my family was doing. He was so encouraging and supportive as I embarked on a career change, something I'm really grateful for. Whether a spare cookie, some freesia from his garden, or something he rescued with me in mind, I never left a visit empty handed. Ever resourceful, I remember once he asked me if I needed some hair ties. Seeing I was puzzled as to why he was offering me hair ties, he explained that he would often find them when he was out and about and had collected quite a few. When I scrunched my face at the thought of used hair ties from the ground he exclaimed, "Well, I washed them!!" Some of my favorite outings together were going to the DVF exhibit at LACMA and listening to Tippi Hedren talk about her book. I always enjoyed hearing him tell me about parts of LA that were before my time, pointing out different areas of Wilshire Boulevard with a driving glove-clad hand. He was a lover of classic LA institutions such as The Pantry and Philippe's, and these places will always make me think of him. Thank you everyone who shared these photos - I love seeing the versions of him I never knew!

The Block Girls

Dear Martin Family, We were so saddened to learn of Darrick's passing and send our heartfelt sympathy. We remember Darrick as a fun-loving, quick witted, caring person who loved his family. My sisters and I each have fond memories of spending time in your family's Port Huron Home. My memories are of how welcoming and kind Darrick was to Connie and me; from showing us his electric train set, to taking us for a ride in a convertible, to snowmobiling, Darrick was the cousin Connie and I loved to see when we visited Michigan! Darrick called me "Belly Shock" (Shelly Block) every time I saw him through the years; and, he always remembered "Bonnie Clock" (Connie Block) too, and we smiled in sweet remembrance. My parents thoroughly enjoyed the visits Darrick made to Seattle and so very much appreciated the time spent with them. We all had a wonderful time at the Block family dinner held when Darrick last visited Seattle in 2008 - lots of fun, memories and laughs! Please know your family is in our thoughts and prayers during this very sad time. We will always smile whenever we think of Darrick. Love, the Block girls
