Loved Ones

Darrell Bernard Tate of Santa Barbara passed away on October 19th, 2020 at the age of 84. Darrell was born in Pittsburgh and raised there and in Corvallis, Oregon.  As a senior in high school he moved to San Diego, where he met his wife Arlene, had their first child together, and attended San Diego State University.  He graduated from SDSU in 1963, and witnessed President Kennedy speak at his graduation.

Darrell then took a job with GE Tempo and moved to Santa Barbara that same year, where he and Arlene had their second child.  Later, he ran his own consultancy before working for the County and for Raytheon, from which he retired in 1995.

He enjoyed being outdoors, whether he was hunting, fishing, golfing, or taking daily walks with his dogs Daisy and Alicia at Elings Park.  He was also an avid hobbyist, and spent much of his time woodworking and building models, including 58 airplanes that lined the walls of his home office.  He attended Saint Mark's United Methodist Church, and was involved in various church ministries throughout his life.

He had an unmistakable presence, and his stubbornness and sense of humor will be missed dearly by those that knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife Arlene, daughters Charlene and Marcene, and grandchildren Charles and Katherine.  He was predeceased by his brother, Lee.

So sorry to hear Mr Tate passed away, after receiving Mrs Tate's Christmas card this year. He was a very good man and I enjoyed having him in the younger part of my life when Marcene and I spent so much time together. Nothing but fond memories of Mr Tate and the whole family. Love & hugs to you, Mrs Tate, Marcene, Charlene and family. XOXO

I was. working at GE Tempo when Darrell showed up with family and no place to reside and I was able to find a place for them. Later I worked at Raytheon were Darrell was working. A great family. RIP my friend

Darrell had a significant impact on my life, from Walk to Emmaus, to Kairos, to our CD group, and of course at St Mark UMC over many years. How many times did Darrell and I drive to and from USP Lompoc? Hundreds. How many times did we serve food at Transition House? Hundreds. If it hadn't been for Darrell's annoying persistence, I never would have become involved in Kairos Prison Ministry. And I still insist that dinner rolls should be sliced top-to-bottom, whereas Darrell always sliced them side-to-side. Other than that, we got along just fine. I will continue to remember him for the rest of my life. Darrell has helped to change many lives and bring people closer to God.

All my memories of Darrell and of you too Arlene are totally happy ones, filled with your limitless, generous hospitality. Darrell had a wonderful way of making each one feel special usually through gentle teasing and much laughter. Miss you, big guy.
