Daniel Comstock

June 21st, 1952 - April 2nd, 2022

June 21st, 1952 - April 2nd, 2022

Daniel L. Comstock, a long-time resident of Los Alamos and employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), passed away unexpectedly in April. He was 69. Dan worked as a librarian for most of his career, first in the Denver public libraries and later in Los Alamos as the librarian for LANL’s photography collection. A native of Ohio, he was a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College (Ohio) and received his masters in librarianship from the University of Denver.   Dan was a devoted friend of libraries and a strong supporter of local animal humane groups. After retirement, his most memorable moments were spent driving through New Mexico’s mountainous and scenic landscapes, an experience he found mystical. He was a devotee of books, American classic movies, and early American television programs.   Dan had an extensive knowledge of LANL’s important photo collections. He worked collaboratively and tirelessly with LANL staff and with those from other museums and institutions to fill their requests for loans of materials suitable for exhibition. His dedication to his work and to his colleagues advanced LANL’s education mission in important ways.   Dan is survived by his niece, Melissa Thomas, of North Carolina. Numerous friends from his career at the Lab as well as friends and acquaintances in Albuquerque, among them his long-time fellow book collector Jerry M.Whitlock, also survive him. His beloved cat Chico survives and has found a new home in Los Alamos.  Those wishing to honor Dan’s life may make contributions to their local animal shelter or to the friends of the library group in their community.

Daniel Comstock passed away on April 02, 2022 at 59 years of age. He was born on June 21, 1952 to mother Marian Ives and father Howard Comstock adn is survived by his neice, Melissa Thomas and Los Alamos friends.

I didn’t know Dan well but I didn’t know he was a very kind and gentle soul! Never a harsh word or anger toward anyone. He loved books and he loved his cat Chico! Rest in peace dear Dan.

Oh my God, I cannot believe that my dear friend Dan is gone. I had the privilege of working with Dan at Los Alamos National Lab. We shared our love of cats, would get together once in awhile to have lunch, would always exchange Christmas cards, and would call each other once in awhile. Dan, my friend, I will miss your friendship and all the talks we shared. Your friend, Patty Garcia

Dan was a loyal friend, a kind and compassionate gentleman. He will be in a far better place now, and his presence there will make it happier for everyone. May God bless and embrace him.
