Cynthia Louise (Gregg) Thompson, 72, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2023, at La Estancia Care Center in Phoenix, AZ.  She has been cremated and no services are planned, according to her wishes. This memorial has been created as a virtual space of remembrance to recognize and commemorate her. Family and friends can connect, share memories, photos, and condolences. She had unique and special relationships with many, and it is her children's hope that individual, private celebrations for her will reflect the memories and the very best parts of who she was to each of you, to bring comfort and closure.

Cindy was born in North Platte, Nebraska, on August 5, 1950, to parents Austin Keith (Bud) Gregg and Sally Jean (Rogers) Gregg. Along with her six siblings, Bruce, Sandra, Rebecca, John, Julia, and Brian, she grew up spending time on her grandparent’s farm a half mile west of the Lincoln Co. Fairgrounds. When she was old enough, she helped with the family business, the Public Market. She attended Taft Grade School, St. Patrick’s High School and No. Platte High School.

On December 17, 1967, she married Elmer D. (Tom) Thompson III in North Platte. They had two children, Donna Lynn in 1968, and Elmer D. (Dee) Thompson IV in 1973.  They lived in Ft. Benning, Georgia for a brief time while Tom was serving in the Army during Viet Nam as well as Mesa, AZ, after he was discharged, but made their family home on E Street in No. Platte until 1977, when they were divorced.

She remained in No. Platte raising her children until she moved first to Co. Springs in 1986 and then Fort Collins, CO in 1987. Cindy worked all her life but was most proud of her career as a Mortgage Loan Officer, licensed Real Estate Broker, and Property Manager in Nebraska and Colorado. She was also co-owner/manager of Raindance Landscape and Irrigation, Inc. in Ft. Collins for ten years. She lived in Florida for a time. She made Scottsbluff/Gering, NE, home twice. The second time living there until she officially retired in 2017 when she moved to Casa Grande, Arizona, to enjoy the sunshine and to be closer to her cousins.

If you knew Cindy, you knew she loved adventure and travel. Equally she took great pride in her homes, entertaining family and friends, and hosting get togethers and parties. Her cooking was enjoyed by all. She relished holidays and special events. Dressing up for Halloween, making Thanksgiving dinners, and throwing her annual Christmas Eve parties were among her favorites. If you showed up on her doorstep at almost any time, cocktails and good eats were soon to follow. She was a hospice volunteer for several years in No Platte, a life-long feminist, and staunch women’s advocate in all things. She played on several pool leagues and played countless numbers of games in her lifetime. She had a passion for golfing, skiing (water and snow), fast cars (vintage or otherwise), motorcycles, and music, games, (especially Trivia and Scrabble), as well as drawing and writing.

The Rocky Mountains and Lake McConaughy were near and dear to her, and she cherished time with her friends, as well as her sisters, brothers, and cousins. Her granddaughters were the recipients of many adventures and good times in their younger years, as she loved having them for weekend get aways. Cindy’s eyes lit up when she talked about horses. She thought the Kentucky Derby should be a national holiday. She was known to wear her fancy derby hat during the races (at home or out and about), whether anyone else was or not. She was very intelligent, independent, determined, and complex. She lived life on her terms, and she will be missed.

Cindy is survived by her daughter, Donna, and son-in-law, Phil Thompson, of Gering, NE; her son Dee, and daughter-in-law, Mollie Thompson, of Minatare, NE; granddaughter, Kendall Shea Thompson, of Denver, CO, granddaughter Bodee Shynia Thompson, of Scottsbluff, NE; grandson Gunner Scott Thompson and grandson Colt Prescott Thompson; great grandchild Cayson William Arellano; sister, Sandra Young, of Lincoln, NE; brother Kevin (John) Gregg, of No. Platte, NE; sister Julia Holmes, of Lincoln, NE; brother Brian, and sister-in-law Vicky Gregg, of Fort Collins, CO; sister-in-law, Diane Gregg, of Loveland, CO; and brother Bob, and sister-in-law Muffy Gregg, of Superior, NE; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Chet and Alice Rogers; parents, Bud and Sally, her brother Bruce S. Gregg, and her sister Becky Farley.

Cyn was my BFF and soul sister. Our friendship spanned over 60 years. Even though we seldom lived in the same town or state, we managed a fun yearly road trip or visit. We spent hours on the phone sharing our daily lives, our passions in life, and our beliefs. We shared so many stages of our lives. We learned to listen to each other with respect and agree to disagree if needed. I admired her independence and zeal. I will miss her laughter most! She is irreplaceable and is so missed, and forever in my heart. My condolences to all who loved her. Thank you Chelli and Donna for your love. I am attaching a few pictures.

Cindy was very special to our family, as the best friend of my mom, Cindy Pumphrey, and my aunt, Connie VanWinkle. She was a powerful, strong woman whom I looked up to, even if it had been years since we had seen each other. Watching the three of them together when I was in my twenties made me yearn for a friendship such as theirs. It was what I'd call "kismet"... a friendship that was destined to be. While I know my mom was probably waiting for her on the other side, I know her loss will be palpable to Connie and to those of us who loved her. Sending so much love to you all as you process this.

I was fortunate that Cyndy considered me a friend. She was my pool playing and pony talking buddy. Cyndy could talk the talk and walk the walk no matter what game of pool we were playing. When it came to the ponies we started analyzing before the Derby through the Belmont and even the Breeders Cup. Whether it was record, jockey, pole position or odds theoretical bets were always made. I am sure much to Cyndy's chagrin our wedding day was Derby Day. Probably one of the few she missed. We ever made her favorite race, the Derby. Blaze on my friend, wear that Derby hat in style. You are already missed greatly, and the memories will remain strong.

My condolences to your family. I did have the pleasure of meeting Cynthia, before she moved to Arizona. She was a beautifully strong woman.
