The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Craig Lawton Prewitt, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 from heart failure. He was 70 years old.

Born on August 12, 1954, in Grants Pass, Oregon, Craig spent most of his life in the Rogue Valley. He dedicated himself to his work as a sales representative for Zimmer Biomet and as a steward of his farm, always serving as a pillar of strength for his family, his land, and his community.

Craig served faithfully in a variety of leadership roles throughout his life. He was the president of the Interfraternity Council and a member of Kappa Sigma at Oregon State University, an active member of Rotary International, and a board member of the Family Nurturing Center. He had an unwavering commitment to education and youth, which was especially evident through his long-standing service on the Phoenix-Talent and Oregon School Boards. He believed in the power of public education and tirelessly advocated for students. As Craig himself once said about the gratification of handing out high school diplomas, “It is the best feeling in the world to contribute to someone’s success in life.”

Those who knew Craig will remember his warm smile, playful sense of humor, and authenticity. He was known for his generous tipping of waitstaff, clever April Fools’ Day pranks, and a deep love and passion for sports. For those lucky enough, his singing and karaoke talents were an added delight. He held every interaction close to his heart and took a genuine interest in all people, eager to hear and celebrate the stories of his surrounding community. Whether you were a stranger or a lifelong friend, Craig made sure you always felt welcome, like a member of his own family.

Craig is survived by his beloved high school sweetheart, Cynthia (Cindy) Ann Buck Prewitt, their children Sarah Eloise Lynch (Jason), Kyle Lawton Prewitt (Rachel), and Stephanie Mae Prewitt, and his three grandchildren Colton Joseph Smith, Faith Ann Prewitt, and Luke Lawton Prewitt. He is also survived by his sisters, Clacia Carver and Lawnedia Potter. Craig was preceded in death by his eldest sister, Barbara Gibson. Craig deeply cherished his family, and particularly enjoyed coaching and attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren.

A public memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Parish in Medford, Oregon on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Craig’s memory to St. Mark's Parish, 140 N. Oakdale Av, Medford, Oregon 97501 or Phoenix-Talent School District Education Foundation, P.O. Box 698 Phoenix, Oregon 97535 ℅ Craig Prewitt donation fund.

Craig Lawton Prewitt leaves a profound legacy of love, laughter, and service. He will be deeply missed.

God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day Craig. We thank you for giving him to us, his family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life; so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Craig and Cindy always made me feel welcomed even after years of separation. One on my Dad's students, Craig shared some special memories of my father giving him advice. Craig was a wonderful gift and his presence is deeply missed; his infectious smile will always be remembered.

Craig was simply one of the best people I knew. His devotion to his family, the community and students of the Phoenix-Talent School district was amazing. He was a tireless advocate for public education on a state and national stage and never wavered from his passionate belief that education was “the great equalizer” for our nation and our society. He left his mark on his community, his school district and the people he cared about and loved. He will be greatly missed! RIP my friend!

Craig was a dear friend for many years. He was our Zimmer representative during most of my surgical career in Yreka. He was a very knowledgeable professional. He was always available and went the extra mile to be helpful. He loved his family and we shared many fun stories over the years. He had a great sense of humor and a mischievous streak that always brought laughs to the OR crew. He also was a devoted father, husband, grandfather, and Christian. I look forward to reuniting on the "other side" at the grand reunion God has promised when we will be healed and renewed!! Until that day our love surrounds Cindy and family!!❤️🙏❤️ Fred Eastman

I was fortunate to get to know Craig when he served as a school board member on his local board, the OSBA board and the PACE board. He was dedicated to all the children of Oregon, public education and school boards. Craig was a joy to be around. He always brought a sense of humor as well as thoughtful insights to our discussions. He was fun and he got the hard work and tough decisions done. And there were some very tough decisions. I know he will be deeply missed. You made a difference to our world Craig.

I had the pleasure of working with Craig for about thirteen years. He earned his customers’ trust and respect by knowing his business and, more importantly, by knowing their business. He earned their friendship by warmly offering them his friendship. He was hard working, knowledgeable, reliable, witty, and a very effective communicator. He’s gone too soon. Thank you for the hospitality Cindy and so sorry for your loss. Shannon Coupens

Craig Prewitt was the consummate gentleman. His son, Kyle, is married to my daughter, Rachel, and from the moment I first met Craig he made me feel totally comfortable and welcome. Over the last 14 years I’ve been included in holiday celebrations as though I was a true member of the Prewitt family. His joy of life and kind spirit will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of spending time in his circle. Gone from this earthly home too soon, but he will never be forgotten.
