Colin Rex "Cabby" Callaway
April 13th, 1943 - August 3rd, 2020
April 13th, 1943 - August 3rd, 2020
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Colin Callaway, loving and devoted father and friend to many. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on 3 August 2020, aged 77, likely dreaming about golf.
He was born 13 April 1943 in Durban, South Africa, to Arthur and Joyce Callaway.
Sport, an integral part of Colin’s life, was the starting point to many a story and friendship. In his youth, he attended Glenwood High School where he played all sports – often as an excuse to miss class. He excelled in cricket and hockey going on to play for Natal in both forms. He would then be selected for the South African national hockey team, however never be awarded national colours given the country’s status at the time.
Thereafter, having moved to Ladybrand, his love for the game of golf emerged. He contributed in developing the sport having served as a member of the Free State & Northern Cape Golf Union for 12 years (5 years as president) as well as the South African Golf Association. He proudly managed the South African amateur team at the 1999 British Amateur in Scotland.
He was a founding member of Free State Nomads and longstanding Rotarian.
He will be remembered for his positive outlook on life, and his ability to make people laugh with his witty jokes. Loyal to a fault, he would go the extra mile to help those he loved and respected.
He always had a good story to tell, usually to be shared over a “lemonade.”
Colin is survived by his wife Lyn and five children Brad, Lisa, Janine (Bloch), Greg and Shannon (Botes); two sisters Norma (Simons) and Eileen; nine grandchildren Erin, Blaine, Alex, Robynne, Sasha, Misha, Ella, Giuliette and Allegra; and three loyal dogs.

Rose and I were shocked to hear of Colin's passing and send our condolences to you Lyn and your family. My memories go back to Colin's involvement in founding the inter club Caledon League, in which golfers from as far as Senekal in the east, and Tweespruit in the west had many memorable tussles. Colin always had something to offer, whether it was his time and energy for other golfers while serving on the Free State Golf Union, or more lately, prizes for golf days or at any time, just a friendly chirp. We will miss you Colin.

We met Colin some 55 years ago. He arrived at Garmouth Avenue in his "Blue Jet" to date Kiki. Colin was an instant hit with the Beckerling sisters and many fun visits and happy and unpredictable outings followed. I recall one restaurant outing with family where the temporary waiters had had a few too many lemonades and we waited a long time for our order. Colin suddenly disappeared from the table and then appeared wearing an apron, with a cloth over his arm and a tray of food from the kitchen. Not exactly what we had ordered but food nevertheless. Colin had saved the evening. We called our meals 'Colin Specials' and had a great evening. Col loved to tease and our Granny was often on the receiving end - something she just loved and responded to. We treasure the yeas that we were able to share family celebrations together. Our hearts go out to the Callaway Family. R.I.P. Colin
