Chei Min Shu was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He passed away on February 3, 2021, at the age of 89. Chei Min was born in Singapore on December 22, 1931. At 10 years old, he started working at a shipyard, honing his lifelong curiosity and skill for building new things. At 27 years old, he moved to mainland China. There, he met the love of his life, Chun Fong, and began a life together with two daughters: Lai Kuen and Lai Ching. In 1973, Chei Min immigrated to Hong Kong with his family; five years later, he immigrated with them to Chicago, USA. He forged this journey to pursue an ultimate ambition: obtaining new opportunities and better education for his daughters. In Chicago, he and his wife owned and operated a restaurant for 17 years to further support these aims. Chei Min persevered through hardship with courage and ingenuity as he worked to build a better life for those who he loved. He cultivated close friendships and a deep relationship with God. He brought happiness into strangers' and friends' lives alike with uplifting humour--he always had a smile to share. Chei Min's compassionate spirit speaks to us during dark times like a beacon shining light on the way forward: where we go far by going together. Along with his two daughters, Chei Min is succeeded by three grandchildren: Aaron, Natalie, and Shannon. Chei Min will be honored in a small in-person celebration on February 10th, 2021, and a larger virtual celebration on February 27th, 2021.

Min was always resourceful, creative, and kind. He loved to get together with his family and friends to travel or celebrate. I am always impressed by how he was able to make something great from modest means. He and his wife Fong built their successful restaurant in Chicago by themselves and a small loan. He engineered the range hood vent motor, carry out counter, and everything.

I am a neighbor of Chei Min Shu's daughter, Lai So, in Naperville. Over the years, when he visited her family, I would see him outside and we'd visit together in the driveway or front yard. But most memorable are our strolls through Lai and Larry's large & gorgeous backyard. We inspected the colorful produce growing in their garden; we'd marvel at the rose bushes & admire the variety & beauty of everything in their beautifully landscaped yard. Sometimes we'd make a tour of my yard, too. I remember how proud he was of his talented & precocious grandchildren, Aaron & Shannon. I know he delighted in their music-playing abilities & academic successes. It was wonderful to see him beam with pleasure when talking about them. He knew our family had lived in Hong Kong & Singapore and this became a bond between us. What a wonderful man I had the pleasure & honor to know. He is dearly missed. Jeni Bohan
