Born June 11, 1925, in Learned, Mississippi, Charles A. Fields was the third of four children born to Walter and Pernina Fields. He attended school at Morning Star and Bar Ridge, where his mother taught and played the piano for the churches. While attending church with his mother, Charles was exposed to the Gospel. He attended until the 3rd grade to help his family with work and chores. He later joined his brother Robert “Jabbo”, driving meat delivery trucks throughout Mississippi.

Charles married Helen Yates on February 24, 1945. He would joke that he paid $1 for her ( the cost of the minister and the license). They later welcomed their daughter Sylvia.

In 1953, with the help of his brother-in-law Lucene Turner, he moved his family to Los Angeles, CA, and he later helped bring his parents and siblings to California. Charles was a provider and entrepreneur; he drove trucks and various jobs and had a 33-year career at US Steel as a crane operator. He also ran a successful bookie (lol) and landscaping businesses until he retired in 2007 to care for his wife, Helen.

Charles was big on family and helping others. He would often quote the lessons his parents had taught him, emphasizing the importance of looking out for your family and fellow man. He enjoyed watching and listening to sports, especially Dodgers games, and horse racing. He was known for always having a good story or joke to tell. Charles received the plan of salvation and accepted Christ into his heart.

Charles was blessed to see his 100th birthday and celebrated surrounded by his loved ones.

Charles transitioned peacefully in his home on June 27, 2025

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Pernina; his sister, Blanche (Mitchel Graham); his brother, Robert “Jabbo” (Pearl); his wife of 71 years, Helen; and his grandsons, Philip Jr. and Vinson Sr.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his daughter, Sylvia (Willie Wilson); his sister, Carol Brown; his granddaughters, Shawni and Saleemah (Terence King); his great-grandsons, Vinson Jr., Tyrell, and Joseph; and a host of nieces, nephews, and loved ones.
