Chuck and I met in the Fall of 1964 at the University of Washington. We bonded through music - Chuck played guitar in local dance bands and I had a nascent interest in doing the same. I vividly remember the Fall night when Chuck showed me his guitar and played a particular chord - E7/9 - that is a staple of R&B and blues. I said, ‘what's THAT chord?!' He showed me, and so was a catalyst for my short but eventful music career. We played together in the Martin Lund Trio, Jammed in Chuck's living room, shared the excitements and traumas of coming of age in the 60's, and then went our separate ways. Chuck pursued medicine and eventually Carla - lucky man. He never lost his passion for music. We exchanged letters all too rarely over the decades, and finally got together in 2006 for not near enough time. So now I hope you're jamming with Oscar Peterson and Gabor Szabo, Chuck, and lighting them up!

We are sorry to hear of Chuck's passing and have many fond memories of hay rides, stump demolitions, neighbourhood dinners and parties. We spent many decades together growing into this old age in which we find ourselves. He was never too busy to lend a hand or to get into the spirit of a celebration of any kind. We enjoyed conversations at the mailbox or along the road while out for a stoll. Thank you for being a kind neighbour and friend to all the neighbourhood Chuck.

There was always an element of fun, and sometimes mischief, on adventures with Chuck! We went skiing at Crystal Mountain in high school days. I had an 8mm movie camera and we were going to emulate Warren Miller by creating an epic ski film. Lacing up our leather boots at the bottom, riding the chairlifts to the top, heading down Lucky Shot, and some great jumps off a big terrain shoulder, it was going to be fantastic. Weeks later we got the developed film back and talked our gang of friends into joining us at Chuck's house on Magnolia Boulevard for the big premier. The fim started out perfectly: good color, in focus, anticipation building until we got halfway down Lucky Shot to the jump-site. Whoever took the camera down below the jump, to film us as we tried our best to fly high off the knoll, got some snow on the lens. The whole rest of the film was a blur of white with occassional color flashes. Boy were we crushed, our film career ended before it began! I wish I had been at the Shilshole boat ramp with my film camera when Chuck reportedly was finally set to burn some rubber in his mom's weak-engine Dodge. As I heard the story, he started up from low enough on the ramp where it was a little wet and slippery to get the wheel spinning. With the engine racing, the drive-wheel was spinning all right but instead of coming up the ramp laying a perfect strip of rubber, the car rather quickly slid backward into the saltwater of Puget Sound...ending the career of an otherwise serviceable family car! Always fun adventures with our good friend, Chuck❤ Fond memories from Bjorn

So very sorry to hear that Uncle Chuck has passed. It's been way too many years but my memories of him are incredibly vivid, I think because he had such a big, warm personality. For instance, there's the adrenaline rush I felt when I was 3/4 as he (doing the math he would have been 17/18?) held me out over the side of a very tall ferry! And then when I turned 16 Chuck happened to be visiting Edie in LA and insisted on taking me out to a jazz club for the first time -- he was the coolest uncle! After college I visited Chuck and Carla in Campbell River and remember a dramatic ride across the Strait in a tiny motor boat captained by Chuck, grilling fresh-caught salmon on the beach and plunging into the icy ocean water after a morning run (led by Carla). Chuck was always full of energy and music, and he had that mischievous smile -- that's how I remember him.
