Belle Starr - Guardian Mother
Carrie Jean Wilson Jones was the mother of four beautiful children, Arnetta, Robert, Lorna, and Maria. She was born in Detroit, Michigan. While she was faced with many challenges, she always remained strong and supportive of her children and her family. She was a beautiful woman, and she loved to wear the latest fashions. Some of her favorites were pin-striped suits and leather outfits. Her hair was usually styled in classic finger waves during the 1970s and her white poodle, “Lady,” was just as fashionable as she was. During this era, it wouldn't be surprising to see fish nets hanging from the ceiling of her home, to include lava lamps, and goldfish aquariums. In tribute of Carrie Wilson-Jones, the poem, “Longing for Mother's Love,” was written. Visit the tribute page to read more.

What is your favorite memory shared with Carrie?
My mother loved the movie theater. Back in the day, it was only 75 cents to enjoy movies at the Fox Theater in Detroit. Sometimes we would catch a double feature at the theater together. Mom's laughter was just so bubbly. I will forever remember the love she gave to all of us. Happy heavenly birthday, Mom!

Music plays the latest hits. Trails of incense fill the room. The lava lamp twirls as colors dance and play upon the moon. Smoke and fragrance intertwine to create a special scent. Polaroid’s hang within the net as the record player spins. Siblings play with paddle ball while another plays with jacks. Mother plays with sugar hill and fills her arm with smack. Empty cupboards sing a song for every child to hear. Grumbling are the hunger pangs standing in the mirror. Busses run from dusk to dawn. The tickets are for free. Movies at the Fox Theater. Our favorite is Bruce Lee. Penny candy at the store. There’s plenty to pass around. The meat market where food is carved and ordered by the pound. Siblings play with hula hoops while another plays basketball. Mother faces welfare staff. Then comes the final call. Hugs bestowed on every child. Kisses placed upon their heads. The love is true. The pain is real. Tears are softly shed. Whisked away into a car, each child a different route. One heads north, another east; the last one’s headed south. Unfamiliar are surroundings in homes decked out in style. Keen eyes assess appearance of every single child. Clothing dull and tattered. They’re led on shopping spree. Allowance for new wardrobe. Stacy Adams on their feet. Longing for mother’s love for this was always true. If only to see her one more time and kiss and hug her too.

Belle Starr, so radiant and proud. Mysterious woman with brilliance of style. A woman of substance in an era of old; a vision, a longing, a story untold. Belle Starr, always taking a stand, a courage so strong, a boldness so grand. A woman of passion, a woman of taste. A magnificent fashion of beauty and grace. Belle Starr, mother, daughter and friend, connoisseur of what she desired to win. A sister, a lover, a woman of zeal; misled by a plight, restored by His will. Belle Starr, always taking a risk. Often teetering close to the edge of a cliff. A woman of fight, a woman of strength; yet gentle and sweet when it was her intent. Belle Starr, forever protecting her blood. Guardian mother to those whom she loved. A provider, yet rider, to protect her children; a fighter, survivor embracing her kin. Belle Starr, Carrie Jones, called to go home. May your love live strong, forever in time. For now, know I love you, forever adore you. A woman of spirit; yes, one of a kind. Belle Starr, shine bright, for your life left its mark. Your bright glowing star yet remains in my heart. Rest now, my dear mother. No more need to fight for you’re safe in His arms with precious new life. I LOVE YOU, MOM!
