Carole Riley-Sauriol

December 3rd, 1949 - January 21st, 2021
Carole-Ann Riley Sauriol was born on December 3rd, 1949. She grew up in a small town in Coventry, England with her three siblings. They were raised by a loving, devoted father, Thomas Riley. She died peacefully in her sleep on January 21st, 2021 in Ottawa, Canada. Her last few days were spent surrounded by family in the joyous spirit of Christmas. She was the beloved wife of Yvan Sauriol, and mother of Alex and Nic Sauriol. My nana was the strongest, most resilient woman I knew. She was a talented artist and baker. I will forever miss baking by her side, always anticipating how proud she would be when our creations came out of the oven. Carole loved singing and dancing like nobody was watching. She loved hearing her grandchildren laugh. She loved learning about astronomy and science and the wonders of our world. She loved tweeting about her political views. She loved looking at the stars, even when it was light out. The one thing she did not love, though, was goodbyes. She passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, without even a whisper of a goodbye. Now, she watches over us, free as the bird she had always dreamt of being. She is gone, but will never be forgotten. Her memory lives on through everyone who was lucky enough to love her. Her legacy is carried by her grandchildren, Elyse, Jacob, Anabelle, Enzo, Katie and Jamie. I leave you with something she often said: “When I die, you’re not allowed to be sad for more than a few days, because I lived a wonderful, full life, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more”.

my prayers are with her family in these difficult times. God bless
Nic Sauriol

She had a complicated life. But if you could find the opportunity to be in the kitchen with her - the little girl in this photo is who you were cooking with. She navigated the seas of life with courage and strength - never allowing anyone else to define her, to limit her or confine her in any way. When you needed someone to fight for you, she was always ready to stand in your corner. As her son, I knew when I was talking with the little girl in this picture, and I mourn for her and pray that she now gets to enjoy the freedom that all children should enjoy.
