Calum Smith

Memorial

Mementos

Calum Smith lived life to the fullest. He was a true friend to so many. His humor, compassion, authenticity, and outlook on life made him an incredibly special person. Calum had a big heart with a soul full of kindness for other people. The depth of his love to others was limitless. He was known to raise the voice to the voiceless and support all unconditionally. Calum was extremely adventurous and never backed down from a challenge whether it was hiking the Kokoda Trail or scuba diving to the greatest depths, his passion for life was contagious. Whilst brave and courageous, Calum was also authentically vulnerable, which is why he connected deeply with so many people. Airswift was lucky enough to hire him after graduating from the University of Manchester. He was a valued member of the Airswift Team for nearly 12 years and his influence within the company was nothing short of profound. He worked everywhere from Manchester to Brisbane, to Papua New Guinea, to Houston to Singapore. He will be greatly missed and it is our privilege to have known him. Calum is survived by his parents, James and Patricia Smith, his brother, Dominic Smith, and his sister, Ashton Smith. Please join us in sharing your memories of Calum Smith.

I still remember clearly reading the e-mail announcing the promotion of Calum to director- youngest in the business. At that time I didn't know him personally, but I remember thinking wow that guy must be good. And he was. It always felt like Calum was 5 steps ahead. He could see a potential in someone that wasn't obvious to others or even the individual. He taught me how to work hard, be the best version of myself, but still have fun and not get stressed out at the little things. I will always remember the advice he shared. In hindsight, I'm so thankful to have his thousands of voice notes. We had plans to go for a drink next week, so I'll hold my glass high for you Cal.

For me Calum was a brilliant communicator! Who's emotional intelligence was unrivaled. His ability to inspire confidence, passion and humility in the people he worked with is something I always admired. I am frustrated and annoyed I never told him this. My deepest condolences to Calum's family and friends on this tragic loss.

Cal was always friends, family and laughter first. Talking on the phone we generally spoke with a strong Northern Irish accent simply because of one random interview we did together. Calum was someone who could always be relied on and he was one of few people I would call in a crisis. He was like a brother, it never mattered how long the gap in communication or how often we met he was always immediately awesome. You are so missed my friend - See you again.

We sat side by side occasionally before our Singapore's office renovation & even after that, he joined our perm team desk some times. A man with less words but surely not less wisdom. It's definitely a great loss for the Airswift leadership & team as a whole. It's also a loss for a young professional like myself - no longer able to tap on his life wisdom professionally & perhaps, personally. At a very young age, he has achieved so much & received much love from the people who know him. My best prayer for everyone at this challenging time.

We are a nation of thousand languages, we cannot express enough our grief in English. Tears are our only language we speak, we can cry a gallon of teardrops, yet our tears cannot change the fact that you are gone too soon. From the ends of the earth, you took a bold stand like your forefathers, who have entered our soils as explorers & missionaries. Media Speculation about Papua New Guinea did not stop you from leaving your family behind in Europe, with your young adventurous mind, you wanted to revisit the land of the unexpected, this time as a brilliant entrepreneur, settling in Papua New Guinea via Australia, cementing the relationship your forefathers have established. Across the globe, people are reflecting on the memories they have built with you, we remember you as our very own "OUR WANTOK". You have served your purpose right in our land, imparting knowledge to our fellow Papua New Guineans, you have trained and developed most of us to where we are today. We know you had a special spot for us because you have spent more years with us, you were our family, you became one of us "OUR WANTOK". Your death is something beyond our control. The God of your forefathers, which is our God today has finally called you home that evening. We are shocked and heart broken to receive that news from afar. You have understood the diversity our country offers and have blended well with us; you are such a rare and unique personality we will dearly miss in our country office. You promised us a visit soon, only to know now that you are with us from above with the God of your forefathers. Us the citizens of this beautiful country will always be grateful for your commitment and dedication to provide employment opportunities for us that crossed paths with you. We will forever remember you as one of the best leaders we had the opportunity to work with and will forever miss you in our hearts. Rest in Peace.. "WANTOK"
