Caitlin Vaughn Schiele, 27, died August 24, 2020. She died at home with her husband by her side after a two year battle with cancer. Catie didn't want a traditional funeral or obituary so I think the two sentences above pretty much cover it. She wanted a celebration of life, and people smiling when they thought about her. Catie was smart, funny, passionate, and always so positive. She had every right to be broken by the misfortune that life threw at her. But she wasn't. Despite everything that happened, she was able to smile and laugh every day. Not only living her life in a way that made her happy, but making sure everyone around her was happy as well. I think this will be a good place for people to come and share happy stories and memories about Catie, and remember the impact she made on all of us. Please don't hesitate to leave as many stories or pictures as you have. I know I, and many others, would love to see and read them all. I figured I'd start us off with a story. On our first big road trip together, Catie and I drove up the coast to San Francisco. One of our stops was Big Sur and we had lunch at the Big Sur Bakery. Catie ordered a chai latte. Not being a caffeine drinker at the time, I had never heard of this and assumed was some kind of coffee. Turns out chai lattes are very tasty, and this one in particular was above average. We realized that because we spent the next few days in San Francisco trying a chai latte from every single coffee stand we passed, and throwing most of them away after a few sips. We'd set the bar too high but had a new drink to search for on all of our adventures.

I was thinking about Caitlyn today. We were best friends over 10 years ago during our freshman year at Depaul. She and I lived downtown at the University Club and she was in the dorm across from me. Her dry wit, sarcasm, contagious smile, and desire experience whatever life had to offer made us fast friends. We ate lunch together nearly every day, went to parties, watched Dexter in the lounge, and had countless sleepovers. I spent more time with her that year than any other person. To this day, I still tell people the story about how I was best friends with someone whose first cousin was Patrick Stump. To be honest, getting to know her was an unforgettable and incredible part of my life. We made fond memories that will last a lifetime and I will miss Caitlin dearly. Reading old messages and posts from her still brings a smile to my face

I am picturing Caitlin dancing on the clouds, until we can join her again! Her laugh, her smile, her willingness to go with it and her love of Cody - that is what I remember. So glad to have shared time with Caitlin and Cody.

So I don't have any photos of Caitlin and I because it dates back when we were in elementary school when all we had were Polaroids and so they're in a box somewhere in my attic. Caitlin, you were one of the kindest people I knew growing up and definitely one of the favorite member of our brownie troop. It meant a lot to know someone like you at that age and made such an impact on me as a kid who felt like an outsider at school. I still remember those playdates at your house. You are such a lovely soul 💛 Rest easy

Caitlin was one of my closest friends in high school. I have so many wonderful memories of her, it's hard to put into words how much she meant to me. I remember meeting her in freshman biology, and how we ended up having Spanish class together all 4 years. We used to have movie nights almost every Friday night with Agnes and Sarah, and Cait always picked these obscure horror films that turned out to be amazing. I remember trying to get her to let me call her a nickname for 4 years, and finally just calling her Kit Kat (even though she hated it). She was so talented and gifted at so many things, she was always our Spanish teacher's favorite student, and he praised her accent and ability almost daily. I remember when we went to Spain with our Spanish class and roomed together, and laughing about the most ridiculous things, like the chaperone from Traverse City, Michigan who wouldn't stop talking about her cherries and how our guide's wife over-pronounced "bocadillos." When she decided to spend time in the Dominican Republic during our first year of college, I remember thinking she was fearless. When I found out she and I had both joined Phi Mu, I was so happy to have another connection to each other. After all she went through in high school, she could have been such a different person, but she handled everything with the maturity of someone much older. The first thing I remember thinking when I met her the first day of freshman year was how cool and sophisticated she seemed, and the more I got to know her the more I realized my first impression was spot on. I feel so lucky to have traveled together, to have laughed together, to have shared pizza and tapas and jet lag and weird soup at Heathrow. I had no idea she was sick, but it doesn't surprise me that she was strong and tough until the end. She was an amazing person and my life is infinitely better for knowing her.
