Bruce Lindsey Miller, 76, of Marietta, passed away July 9, 2019 at his residence. Bruce was born on December 17, 1942 in Charleston, West Virginia and was the son of the late Bernard and Eliza Virginia (Faber) Miller. Bruce graduated from Nitro High School in 1961 and attended Marietta College before moving to Columbus. He then moved to San Francisco in 1969 and worked as a computer programmer and specialist. He worked as both an independent consultant and as an employee for various companies over the next thirty one years, finally retiring from Visa in 2000. He returned to the city of Marietta in 2006 and made it his home. He participated on the crew team in college, and he played golf, tennis, croquet, and shot pool throughout his life. He never missed a baseball game and would speak about the ins and outs of each game in great detail with his friends and his nephew Soren. He loved all genres of music, but jazz held a special place in his heart. While in San Francisco he spent many of his nights at local jazz clubs, watching the greatest artists of our time perform. He had a passion for the arts and was an active member of The Colony Film Festival for many years. He attended countless performances hosted by the Esbenshade Series and The Evergreen Arts & Humanities Series in Marietta. His many friends included musicians, artists, vocalists, filmmakers, and food connoisseurs. He loved movies and he and his girlfriend could often be found sitting side by side in their recliners, holding hands, watching movies until the early hours of the morning. He was a romantic at heart, buying his girlfriend flowers the first night they met. Over the years he would often surprise her with cards for no reason and he held her hand everywhere they went. He always made sure they had a date night every week or two. He was an accomplished chef, so she never had to cook and she never had to do the dishes. He drew her a large heart on a piece of notebook paper and he would hide it in various places throughout the house. When she found it she would hide it for him. The edges are tattered and worn after all these years, but she still has it. It is the most precious gift he ever gave her. He was never afraid to walk up to a stranger and begin a conversation. He considered everyone he met a friend and made it a point to learn their name. He didn’t want a memorial because he wouldn’t be here to enjoy it. There was nothing he liked more than getting together with friends. He loved life, and he lived to be kind to people. All he ever asked was for others to do the same. Bruce is survived by his girlfriend of ten years, Delilah Stackpole, of Parkersburg, WV; his sister Andrea (Zeke) Zastrow and nephew Soren Whiting of Washington Court House, OH; and his brother Dean (Kaye) Miller of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Just heard about Bruce's passing in July from the Marietta College magazine. Bruce was a great friend while we were at Marietta, and I visited him in San Francisco. We saw each other at my 50th Marietta College reunion and e mailed some thereafter. He mentioned that he was terminal but would not share more specifics, and requested no more e mails, so I unfortunately lost track. Any information would be appreciated. George Burns M.D.
