James Bruce Merriman—son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, storyteller, cook, jester, monk, wizard—has shapeshifted once more. On March 18, 2022 Bruce left this lifetime just before sunrise, riding the wings of the last full moon of the winter equinox.

Bruce was the oldest of four children, born to Harry Ernest Merriman and Helen Louise Merriman on June 24, 1949 in Colby, Kansas. Growing up in small-town Humboldt and Fredonia, Kansas, early life was churning homemade vanilla ice cream on the back porch, dreams of running away with Gypsy caravans, climbing pear trees, casting lines in fishing holes, catching fireflies, and chasing balsa wood airplanes that took mysterious detours on the way to school. Bruce lost his mother Helen at the age of 9—a loss that deeply shaped his spirit and compassion for life. He was fortunate to have the loving support of his father, grandmother Mae Hughes, and later his stepmother Francis Merriman.

Bruce, nicknamed “Cat” and later “Grandpa Gato,” certainly lived nine lives or more. As his wife Jan always said, “the only thing consistent about Bruce is change.” He was a golf pro; a traveling salesman; the creator of a family & friend-run amusement park; a writer; a golf, basketball, football, and soccer coach; a master chef (but only for friends and family); a gardener; and a stay-at-home dad. Unlike most grown-ups who forget to see things through curious eyes, Bruce’s wonder and mischief only grew with age. When Heath, Brian, and Kim were kids, the highlight of their Minnesota neighborhood was “lightning mountain”—a twisting luge track over picnic tables and between trees that Bruce made over the course of weeks, icing down the track with the garden hose. Everyone who ever stepped into Bruce and Jan’s house would encounter magical themed bars on back patios that he would recreate every year from recycled objects and a disregard for the laws of gravity. And just this past Christmas, Bruce/Grandpa Gato created a psychedelic winter wonderland display for his grandkids—think surrealism meets laser lights, glow in the dark paint, and lots of aluminum foil.

Bruce’s life can’t be captured by a traditional list of accomplishments—his love for change prevented him from fully finishing most of what he started. And it can’t be captured chronologically—he lived and moved outside of linear time. His life and spirit may be best captured by the way he gave us a glimpse into the in-between. He saw things most others couldn’t or didn’t want to see. His version of reality—while questionable by most measures—often captured a deeper sort of truth and possibility, one that inspired people to take chances, reinvent themselves, and see the world in a different light.

Bruce’s spirit carries on through his wife Jan; children Heath (Brooke), Brian (Stormy), Kim, and Dani (Nico); grandchildren Gwynn, Rylan, and Manu; siblings Craig (Jan), Jan (Scott), and Cindy (Bruce); mother Francis; and the many extended family and friends that have crossed his path.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 25, 2022. To honor Bruce’s love of coaching girls’ sports and supporting live music, the family wishes any memorial donations to be made to:

Bruce played such a pivotal role in helping me become a good golfer. I remember so many sessions out at the range hitting balls and having Bruce give small adjustments that changed my game for the better. When he coached me, there was never disappointment, anger, frustration. He was kind, gentle, and patient with me through the whole journey. Within all my memories of Bruce, the thing that remains the same is recalling just how kind he was. I’m gonna miss him.

I had to add one more pic of our beloved head coach, Bruce, and our 8th grade championship. This was December 2019. ❤️

I feel so lucky and honored to have gotten the chance to collaborate with these two beautiful people. Designing a house is a very VERY intimate process. One I adore completely because I get to know people in a special way. I get to see their lifestyle patterns, see their habits their frustrations, their dreams and most importantly, I get to see their individual magic that makes them sparkle. Well the first time I walked into the “Bar” I got goosebumps. Hearing the stories of how Dani and Bruce and Jan created that glorious space over time, made me know instantly that this was a special family. Bruce and Jan and I became instant friends, I wouldn’t even hesitate to say they became family. It’s always hard when the last nail is hit by the hammer because you know your relationship is coming to an end, but thankfully I got to stay in their lives and so thankful I got to see Bruce one last time. Bruce your magic is ONE OF A KIND! You left your mark on my heart - I can’t wait to celebrate you this summer. But I will celebrate you daily by remembering to keep the Wonder and Wild in my daily life and in my children’s life. Dani, what a beautiful tribute to your father. He spoke about you and your family with such high regard. It always made me smile. Peace be with you all. Thinking of everyone who knew him, we all are better for knowing him! :-)

It was a dagger to me and my family when we became aware of Bruce's passing this past Spring. He has meant so much to me and our family for over a decade since we became part of the community at Flying Horse. Not only was he a GREAT friend, but the only golf coach/mentor I've ever had. I'll never forget the first time I met "El Gato Rojo"...showed up on the 10th tee box at FH, we already had a 4some but he played back 9 with us...super chill with cool vibe and a PHENOMENAL golf game. I was like "who is this guy with the earing" (and I tink a ponytail at the time. My life and golf game would never be the same from that day on. He befriended me, took me under his wing, and saw something in my golf game/potential that I didn't see. He refined my swing, encouraged me, and challenged me to think big, raise the bar, and go low! I have been blessed to win multiple club championships and I owe them ALL to one person...Bruce "El Gato Rojo" Merriman!!! I have so many GREAT memories with my friend Bruce...but I'll narrow it too a few: Fav Golf Memory...when Bruce's son (and great guy and golfer), Heath, moved for work to Kansas, Bruce reached out to me to ask if I would be his partner in the Horseman Classic. What an HONOR! I was blown away that he would ask me...Brucey was a legend and this was the big boys season long tournament. It was scratch two man best ball from the Tips! In a field of all the top players at FH, Bruce and I were the clear underdogs. It was as much fun as I've ever had on the golf course that summer. It was like spending an entire summer of golf competition with "Yoda" as your partner. I learned so much, laughed a lot, and got to watch the "master" at work at his craft. We ended up running the table, going undefeated, and winning it all...we were like "Hickory Huskers" in Hoosiers...nobody gave us a chance...but all things golf were possible with El Gato Rojo! I know that championship meant so much to Bruce. Fav Non Golf Memories...playing Bocce Ball on his designed course (Brilliant), watching 180 Degrees South, listening to great/eclectic music, eating his world class cooking, reading excerpts of his book (AMAZING!), talking Hoops, and walking the grounds and talking life and theology (I'm a pastor). Fav Fam Memory...Bruce has left an amazing legacy in all of us that he poured into, whether it was life or golf...especially young people. My son Bobby had a special and wonderful High School golf career. Again, all credit goes to Bruce for Bobby's success. He encouraged him, made it fun, and challenged to raise the bar and think big. Bobby love for golf has continued to grow, and Bruce is a big reason for that. Thank you EGR! Bruce was not only a GREAT golfer, he was a GREAT athlete. I so appreciated him not only supporting Bobby, but also my oldest Billy, and his High School career as a top basketball player in Colorado Springs. I miss my friend, coach, and mentor more than words can express! Though he is gone, he has left an amazing and lasting legacy, and will never be forgotten in the Ball family. We go to Celebrate his life today! It is a life worthy of great celebration!! Love you and miss you, my friend!!! db
