Bruce Eugene Hoppe

Bruce Eugene Hoppe, affectionately known as the “Cowboy from Chicago,” passed away on January 11, 2025 in Pueblo, Colorado.  Born March 20, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois, Bruce was the cherished son of Lorraine and Eugene Hoppe.

He is survived by his sisters, Susan Hoppe and Gail Norusis; brother-in-law, Greg Norusis; nephews, Mike O'Connor, Brian O'Connor, and Brent Norusis; and niece, Jennifer Crone.  His family and all who knew him will hold his memory close to their hearts.

Bruce lived a life defined by adventure, creativity, and an unwavering passion for learning.  A skilled horseman, he earned multiple cutting horse awards and devoted countless hours training, competing, and riding horses.  His love for horses, animals, and the American West was a cornerstone of his life.  Beyond his equestrian achievements, Bruce was a man of many talents-a musician, writer, builder, educator, and dedicated public servant.

After earning his college degree, Bruce joined the Peace Corps, embarking on a transformative journey to Africa that ignited a lifelong spirit of exploration.  While his career and passions involved working with horses, he also trained Vista Volunteers, worked in various organizations on community policy and program development  and served as a reporter for the Union County Leader. He pursued higher education with determination in his 70's to study fiction writing, when he went on to serve as adjunct professor, as well as authoring several books.   He retired in 2024 as a grant writer with SRDA in Pueblo.

Known for insatiable curiosity and encyclopedic knowledge, Bruce was fondly nicknamed the “walking dictionary” in his youth.  While his unique approach to life sometimes posed challenges, he faced them with courage and grace.  His adventurous spirit and creative energy left a lasting impression on those who crossed his path.
