Brian Powell
April 6th, 1951 - April 14th, 2021
April 6th, 1951 - April 14th, 2021
On Wednesday, April 14, 2021, Brian James Powell of Winthrop, ME, beloved partner, father, brother, and friend passed away after a years-long battle with cancer. He was born in Waterbury, CT on April 6, 1951 to Robert (Ed) and Mary Greaney Powell. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Robert (Bobby) Powell.
Brian served in the US Army in the 101st Airborne Division from 1968-1971, completing one tour in Viet Nam before being honorably discharged. His time in the military informed his beliefs in fighting for world peace, social justice, and community service. He was passionate about fishing, music (both creating and enjoying), and personal and spiritual growth. To those who knew and loved him, Brian will be remembered as a kind, funny, exuberant, highly opinionated, and very, very playful man, who was as eager to wax philosophical about faith, politics, and his personal values as he was to tell tall tales, have fun, and make others laugh.
Surviving to treasure his memory are his partner of the last two years, Stephanie Deese, of the home; his daughter Annie Powell; his younger brother Barry Powell and wife, Joie of Fort Myers, FL; nephew Michael Powell and wife, Kalie of Lancaster, NY; and niece Christina Powell (Adam) of Buffalo, NY. The family would also like to acknowledge his great-nieces and nephews, “adopted” grandchildren, and the many friends and “found family” members Brian made in both Connecticut and Maine. He loved and cherished these friendships and connections. We thank them for the love and support they showed Brian both before and during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that everyone who cared for Brian help and assist someone in need, or to “light a candle in the darkness,” as he did and asked that we do also. Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospitals for Children in his honor.
“Perhaps love is like the ocean, full of conflict, full of pain; like a fire when it's cold outside or thunder when it rains. If I should live forever and all my dreams come true, my memories of love will be of you.” ~ John Denver
