Football was his life. Chelsea was his forever home.

Robert Victor Tambling was born on 18 September 1941 in Storrington, West Sussex, England — a boy who would grow up to become one of the most beloved footballers of his generation, and Chelsea FC's greatest ever goalscorer. Bobby joined Chelsea's youth system at just 15 in 1957, and within two years he had already announced himself to the football world. On 7 February 1959, he made his senior debut against West Ham United at Stamford Bridge, scoring on his first appearance in a 3-2 victory. He was 17 years old. It was the beginning of an 11-year love affair between Bobby Tambling and Chelsea Football Club. When Jimmy Greaves departed for AC Milan in 1961, Tambling stepped out of the shadows to become Chelsea's main striker and the heartbeat of the team. Manager Tommy Docherty made him club captain in 1962 — during a spell in the Second Division — and Bobby repaid that faith spectacularly, scoring 35 goals in 40 league matches to lead the club back to the top flight. He was, at the time, the youngest player to captain a team to Football League promotion. In 1965 he helped Chelsea lift their first knockout trophy, the League Cup, scoring in the final against Leicester City. Over his 11 years at Stamford Bridge, Bobby scored 202 goals in 370 appearances — a record that stood for 47 years until Frank Lampard surpassed it in 2013. Known for his hunched running style, his electric pace, and a pin-point left foot that sent the ball dipping before keepers could react, he was not merely a record-maker but a genuine match-winner. He was capped three times for England between 1962 and 1966. In 1973, Bobby moved to Ireland, where he fell in love with a new football community. He played for Cork Celtic, helping them win their only League of Ireland title in 1974, and later managed Cork Celtic, Cork City, and Crosshaven AFC — giving four decades of service to Irish football. Through everything, it was Bobby's character that left the deepest mark. His trademark humility, warmth, and quiet kindness endeared him to everyone he met. He was, as those who knew him said simply, a genuinely nice man. He passed away peacefully on 3 June 2026, surrounded by his beloved wife Val and their children Jamie, Frankie, and Adelaide. Football was his life. Chelsea was his forever home. And the memory of Bobby Tambling — gentle, gracious, unstoppable — will endure long after the final whistle.

Bobby is a gentleman of football and Chelsea Football Club. If you want an ambassador, someone who shows what the club means and who transcends the generations, he is the man. It's an absolute privilege to call you my mate.

My wife and I had the pleasure of knowing Bobby and Kathleen for a number of years during his playing career and he was one of the nicest persons you could wish to meet. He was liked and admired by everyone he came into contact with and was a true modest gentleman.

His passion for football was absolutely infectious. Whether he was talking tactics, working on set pieces, or telling stories from his playing days (sometimes for the tenth time), you couldn't help but hang on every word. Bobby leaves an enormous hole in all our lives.
